Five young and charming island beauties have signed up to compete for the title of Miss San Pedro 2002-2003. The pageant, held under the auspices of the San Pedro Town Council, is scheduled for Saturday, September 7th, 2002 at Central Park. This event will be the kick-off for this year's September Celebrations being held under the theme "Proud and Strong at 21." The contestants, Maria Marroquin, Sheena Torres, Sahsil Perez, Marcia Haylock and Jenine Haylock will make stage appearances in swimsuit, and casual and evening wear, followed by a question and answer session. The pageant committee, headed by Deputy Mayoress Mel Spain, is working on the final details for this event to ensure the audience is swept away by the glamour and elegance that will be showcased that evening.

The San Pedro Sun had the pleasure of meeting with the five young women and is pleased to share the following information about each of the contestants.

Sixteen year-old Maria Marroquin hails from Belmopan City but has been living in San Pedro for the past six months. She is presently working as a gift shop attendant at Avalon Reef Club Resort. This is her first pageant and Maria says she is very excited about the whole affair and hopes to gain lasting friendships during the event.

Sheena Torres was born in San Pedro and is seventeen years old. She is presently a senior at San Pedro High School and has competed twice in this institution's Miss Popularity Contest. Her hobbies include singing and dancing. Miss Torres told The San Pedro Sun that she has always wanted to participate in the Miss San Pedro Pageant and that this year an eleven year-old boy gave her the final push she needed to follow her dreams. She says that she hopes to gain a lot of experience from this event and that is something she will eventually tell her children about with pride. In the future, Sheena aspires to become a fashion designer. She explained that by entering this pageant she is presenting herself to the public and will move on from there to pursue her goals. "I want to invite all the people of San Pedro to come and witness this event. I also encourage young women to embrace opportunities such as the Miss San Pedro Pageant and use them as educational tools for their future," ended Miss Torres.

Sahsil Perez is sixteen years old and a graduate of San Pedro High School. She recently enrolled at San Pedro Junior College where she will pursue an Associate's Degree in Business Administration. Miss Perez's future career goal is to become an active businesswoman in the tourism industry. Sahsil's hobby is reading Danielle Steel novels. She decided to join the pageant as a way of representing the younger generation. Miss Perez is originally from Orange Walk but calls "La Isla Bonita" her home.

Marcia Haylock is seventeen years old and is a graduate of San Pedro High School. She enjoys a variety of sports, football in particular, and hopes to become a veterinarian in the future. Miss Haylock competed in the Miss San Pedro Pageant last year and was selected the first runner-up. She stated this type of event is very important for young girls as it enables them to make new friends and have fun at the same time, which is what the pageant is all about. She decided to give the pageant one more try to conquer her fear of public speaking and stage fright. Miss Haylock also told The San Pedro Sun that she wants to serve her community and will soon be doing so by joining the San Pedro Branch of the Belize Red Cross.

Eighteen year-old Jenine Haylock is a graduate of San Pedro High School and is presently the manager at Island Internet. Her hobbies include drawing, painting and taking care of her dog "Mr. Wrinkles". Miss Haylock is concerned about the distress of the youth on the island and feels that by entering a pageant such as this, she can uplift the spirit and morale of the younger generation. She hopes that by being a good role model she can convince and inspire others to do the same in the future. In the past, Jenine participated in the Miss San Pedro High School Popularity Contest and was voted first runner-up. In the future Jenine aspires to become a lawyer. She also intends to join the San Pedro Branch of the Belize Red Cross.

The contestants will participate in various outings leading to the night of the pageant. In addition to the first and second place prizes, awards will be given for Miss Photogenic and Miss Congeniality. The new Miss San Pedro will be crowned at a special coronation during the St. George's Caye Day ceremony on Tuesday, September 10th.
