| Mayoress Elsa Paz with Mother of the Year 2003 Fe Trejo
|
In honor of all the
mothers who reside on the island, the San Pedro Women's Group held a
grand Mother's Day celebration last Sunday. Sponsored by the San Pedro
Town Council, Central Park was filled to capacity as over five hundred
mothers came out to celebrate their special day.
Each mother received a red rose and a raffle ticket as
they entered the gate. San Pedro Mayoress Elsa Paz then welcomed the
gathering before the entertainment commenced. Master of Ceremonies for
this special occasion was Ruben Campos of Orange Walk.
Before and after dinner, the mothers enjoyed lively
performances by The San Pedro Dance Company, Barbara's Dance Group, the
Garifuna Dancers and Michelle's Dance Group. Poems read by Mark Amos and
San Pedro Youth Council, as well as sweet songs sung by Zahairie Chable
and Ruben Gonzalez paid tribute to all of the marvelous mothers. Mariachi
Alfredo Tamai of Orange Walk and Entertainer Alexander "Alexis" Cruz of
Chetumal, Mexico also serenaded the mothers with several of their
favorite and romantic songs.
More than 30 prizes were presented over the course of
the evening to the mothers in attendance. The grand announcement was the
Mother of the Year 2003 title, which was awarded to Mrs. Fe Trejo. A
long-time resident and well-respected mother on the island, Mrs. Trejo is
a 71-year-old housewife and mother of nine loving children. She received
a number of prizes including a gold pin, a bouquet of flowers and $500
(cash prize donated by Belize Bank).
Several other wonderful prizes were given in many
mother categories, including the Mother/Father award given to Lily Kumul
and Rosela Lara for their gallant efforts in raising children by
themselves. Another prize was awarded to the mother with a heart decal
stuck to the bottom of her chair. Laughter exploded through the audience
as the crowd was "turned upside down" in a search for this symbol of
love.
Karaoke supplied by Ramon Guerrero and Ruben Gonzalez
provided more excitement to finish the festivities. Area Representative
Manuel Heredia Jr. then offered the Vote of Thanks ending the official
program.
The organizers of the 2003 Mother's Day Celebration
would like to thank all of the mothers who attended, the entertainers, as
well as the many volunteers, businesses and individuals who gave so
generously towards this spectacular program.
