Dilapidated San Pedro Police Barracks
|
For years now, the San Pedro Police
barracks have been a source of concern. Numerous attempts have been made
in the past by local citizens to do something about the situation but
these actions were met with little interest from government. Most
recently, a meeting between SP Police Inspector James Moreira and several
concerned residents resulted in a new plan to upgrade the existing living
conditions of the police.
According to the committee, thirteen San
Pedro policemen are living in squalid conditions. "We had a difficult
time inspecting the police barracks because the stench of uric acid was
so strong from broken sewer pipes," they stated.
Reportedly, there is only one toilet, one
sink and an outdoor shower for communal use. A release stated, "The roofs
leak badly and there are holes in the walls of their rooms. They have no
cooking facilities. We really need a whole new building to house our
policemen but government wonít help us at this time."
The committee insists that something must be done
immediately to remedy this disgraceful situation. The members expressed
the opinion held by many in the community - that any officer who is hired
to protect our properties and our loved ones should not be subjected to
this way of life.
So far, a few financial donations have been received,
as well as toilets, sinks, fans, lights, linens, and sundry items from
the current demolition of Paradise Hotel. Besides financial assistance,
the committee is in need of roofing material, PVC, sewer and water pipes,
and paint.
To resolve this awful dilemma and
increase the self-respect of the SP Police force, the committee is asking
for assistance from the San Pedro community. A fund has been established
at the Alliance Bank for those who wish to help with donations. Anyone
needing additional information may contact Ramon NuÒez, Jerry McDermott,
Corry McDermott or Inspector James Moreira at the San Pedro Police
Department.
