San Pedro Library Art Contest and sale a success







Geraldo Badillo, 1st place Upper Division

On Thursday, March 5th, the San Pedro Library held its annual Art Contest and art show at 6:00 p.m. at the Lions Den. Children from the San Pedro R. C. School, Island Academy and Lidia's Institute of Fine Education submitted art entries. The children drew and painted scenes of Belize and of their community. There were three judges for the evening's competition: Mr. Peter Laws - curator at the Ambergris Museum, Mrs. Catherine Paz and Lion Beto Marin.

The judges selected four winners from the lower division (Beginners, Infant I and II); 4th place was awarded to Michelle Nuñez for her sailboat and fish painting, 3rd place was awarded to Dhara Parker for her painting of a rainbow, 2nd place was awarded to Justin Castillo for his painting of two Belizean faces, and 1st place was awarded to Allan Paz for his painting of a toucan.


Four winners were selected from the middle division (Standard I, II and III); 4th place was awarded to Julia Borja for her underwater painting, 3rd place awarded to Tiana Steel for her painting of manatees, 2nd place was awarded to Eric Steel for his painting of a frog on a tree, and 1st place was awarded to Kevin Villatoro for his painting of a boat at sea called Belizean Tours.

Five winners were chosen from the upper division (Standard IV, V and VI); 5th place was awarded to Shena Tores for her painting of a Mayan Ruin, 4th place was awarded to Alicia Tzul for her drawing of a toucan in a tree and a tapir, 3rd place was awarded to Debra Guerrero for her painting of a shining full moon, 2nd place was awarded to Marlena Gomez for her painting of a jaguar, and 1st place was awarded to Geraldo Badillo for his painting of a Mayan village. The winners were awarded prizes and all the children that entered their art work received a certificate of recognition and pencils.

Art that was sold at the show was donated by James Quincy, Jack Westerhold and the members of the Tuesday Art group that meet at Caribbean Villas to share and create art. Mr. Bob Witte donated $500.00 dollars to the library service and the Lions Club donated the majority of the B-B-Q sale to the library. The art sale is the major income earner for the library.
