The San Pedro International Costa Maya Festival Committee held a meeting on Tuesday, April 21st to discuss on going preparations for the 1998 festival which will commence on July 21st and conclude on July 26th.
The chairman of the committee, Gach Guerrero, announced that the festivals new office, located downstairs of the Town Hall, is now open from Monday to Friday and will be manned by Tony Ventura. For more information about the festival call 3016 or fax 2246 during normal working hours.
It was also announced that the repairing and replacing of the old football field would commence in early May. The committee is hoping that the fence will be complete by June 29 when San Pedro will celebrate its 150 birthday. Replacing the fence is the committees donation to the town.
It was reported that several hotel managers and owners have donated rooms to the committee for invited guests during the week of the festival. Hotel sponsors so far include, the San Pedro Holiday Hotel, Paradise Hotel, SunBreeze Hotel, Royal Palm and Banyan Bay Villas, the Belize Yacht Club and the Spindrift Hotel. Four countries have confirmed that they will be participating in the Reina del la Costa Maya Pageant. They include Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. El Salvador has yet to confirm their participation. Information and photographs of the Costa Maya beauties will follow shortly.
Performers for the six nights of the festival are being selected. It has been confirmed that for Mexico Night the Ballet, the Folklorico de Quintana Roo will be performing again this year. This group of talented and entertaining dancers have become regular visitors to the island and have become favorites among many. CRACK, a band of energetic musicians sure to get you in the party mood will be performing on Mexico Night. Entertainers for the other nights of the festival will be announced in the coming weeks.
This is the last week for interested persons to submit their T-shirt logos. All entries should be submitted before May 1st in order to qualify for the competition. Only two logos have been entered so far. Winner of the T-shirt logo competition will receive a season pass to the festival, a T-shirt displaying their winning logo, and fame and recognition by being featured in the San Pedro Sun.
People who are interested in having a booth during the week of the festival can now purchase their booths at the festivals office. Those who purchase a booth will receive two free passes and may buy a third ticket at half price.
