| Boat procession participants await blessing
|
Festivities in honor of Dia de San Pedro commenced on Friday, June 25th at
the old football field. An elegantly decorated stage welcomed the gathering
for the official opening ceremonies. Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Angel Nuñez
first presented Mr. Omar Guerrero to lead the crowd with a brief invocation.
The Belize National Anthem was sung by young Nathalie Arceo. Short speeches
were given by Mayor Alberto Nuñez, Hon. Daniel Silva, Minister of
Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Patty Arceo and Councilor Omar Guerrero.
Before the entertainment commenced, a brief, but eye-catching fireworks's
display was held. Barbara's School of Dance entertained with a variety of
impressive dances. After the dance presentation, Salus Magaña band was
responsible for keeping the crowd in the party mood and they did. The
children had a great time at the mechanical games that were available.
The celebration continued Saturday evening with speeches by Hon. Marcial
Mes, Minister of Rural Development and Culture, Councilor Pedro Ayuso and
Town Board Advisor Hector Trejo.
This night, the San Pedro Dance Company
took over to entertain with cultural and modern dances. The performers
delighted the gathering with great choreography and intricate costumes.
Special appearances during the evening were from two Americans and one Cuban
dancer; friends of the dance company. Immediately following the dance show,
Salus Magaña once again entertained the gathering until the wee hours of the
morning.
An entire afternoon of jump-up continued on Sunday. During the evening a
Marimba Band, Alma Beliceña played at The Boatyard. On Monday evening a
special event was held for the Senior Citizens of San Pedro. The traditional
morning mass for men officiated by Father Murray was held on Tuesday morning
followed by breakfast at the Lions Den for the entire community. At 6:15
a.m. the boat procession commenced, led by a replica of St. Peter, and ended
at the embarc- adero where all the boats were blessed. In the afternoon, a
final procession took place throughout the main streets of San Pedro in
honor of our Patron Saint.
