Happy Earth Day to you.

Suppose you had a birthday party and no one came? It might happen here. This weekend the world's population is celebrating Earth Day; a worldwide day of awareness of environmental concerns. In cities and villages all over the world people will be voluntarily cleaning streets and beaches, planting trees and engaging in other environmental projects.

In San Pedro Sonja Wade of Playador Hotel and Janet Woolam of Victoria House are in charge of an Adopt a Road/Beach program. Response has been non-existent to this point.

"We need volunteers," Wade said. "We have divided up the beach and streets in sections from Boca del Rio to Victoria house and we need someone to adopt them."

Woolam said, "So far our only response has been from Victoria House employees, although we do expect more participation. We will certainly be out there cleaning."

Those who adopt a beach or a street will clean the street Saturday, April 19th beginning at 9:00 a.m. Meeting places are the Blue Hole Dive Centre, Ramon’s Village, Caribbean Villas, Mata Rocks, Victoria House and Sunset Beach Resort. The organizers are seeking donations of trash bags, gloves or refreshments and volunteers with pickup trucks to take trash bags to the dump.

For more information call Janet at Victoria House - 2067 or Sonja at Playador - 2870.

Mito Paz of Green Reef and Banyan Bay is in charge of the Belize Reef Festival which takes place Sunday, April 20th on the beach at Mar de Tumbo. The festival starts at 11:00 a.m. and among other items of interest, features boat trips to the reef.

"We have an exhibit of underwater photos by Joe Miller," Paz said, "and an art auction featuring local artists."

There will also be a sand sculpture contest. Bring your sunscreen and your environmentalist attitude.
