REPORT #274 May 2000
A QUIET REVOLUTION MOSTLY CENTERED TO THE ADVANTAGE OF THE PORT OF BELIZE CITY PRIVILIGED BUSINESS'S WITH POLITICAL CONTACTS AND INFLUENCE AS USUAL, HAS BEEN GOING ON IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND THE INTERNET

Produced by the Belize Development Trust

The Cabinet in Belmopan has been granting Permits or Licenses in the field of private ISP facilities. The monopoly of BTL telecommunications and the possibility of massive loss of data and services with only one legal monopoly ISP provider and no backups, has provided the impetus to start granting permits to other businesses with needs in the internet field. Most require two or three systems, to provide backup fail safe continuance of business in case the one Monopoly BTL provider goes down. Without competition in the ISP internet field, there is no back up fail safe system available to people who rely on the internet for their business. In case of a hurricane, the whole nation could be down indefinitely, even in areas that did not get hit.

Permits to provide their own services have been granted to:

Belize Communications and Securities Ltd.
America Jet
Data Pro (EPZ Act)
Barclay's Bank Intenational
University of West Indies
Belize Distance Education
DHL
Belize City branch Chamber of Commerce
Inter-American Bank
By rights, any permit or licensing system, should be available to all, for the same fee and with the same regulations. Otherwise you do not have a democracy!

The list of outfits above, was taken from local Channel 5 News, on the internet.
