Cayo Rosario....Wow

White Ibis on Cayo Rosario and Cayo Pajaros nesting with chicks in the nest and packed with birds using these two little Cayes as a nesting colonies. Amazing !
I don't think the Ban width should suffer all the shots I got yesterday but, Wow what a birdwatching Dream these two little islands are.

All these different stages of morph (changes in color of the birds as they develop) make it really hard to ID sometimes.
I had to wait to see mom and pop come home to the nest to be sure this was a White Ibis Chick. I had never seen one before.

The ground and all the nest are covered with this white bird poop, this Cormorant nest with the two chicks isn't 'naturally' white :-)

The Natural Sanctuary for the birds these two islands are makes them a valuable assets to Ambergris Caye and The Belize Tourism Industry. Tour Guides routinely take tourist to see this natural wonder and I'm worried something sneaky, deceitful and Covert is going to rob Belize of them.
Dredging operations are postured to fill the interior of theses islands and when no one is paying attention they could be chopped clear of mangrove ruining them for Belize and the birds forever.

this is what I found while searching Belize Laws of Eminent Domain.
Almost all of the islands like this are gone now. preserving and protection these two will ensure the future of these birds on Ambergris Caye.

He's a beauty! One of my Canadian friends, Long Hair, and I watched one of these in a yard in the Boca Del Rio area, not too far from the bakery. He systematically took one claw at a time and shook his head until the rest of the body flew off. He then dropped that claw and did the same with the next. He did this until all the claws were detached then he pierced the body shell repeatedly and feasted on the contents. What a show that was - and me without a camera.

Where do you leave from? What's the cost? What days do you go?\
Let's get this thing promoted.
Of course I'm interested.

Harriette,

I was lucky enough to get on the trip yesterday morning...it was AWESOME. At Rosario Caye, I counted 25 assorted herons in the middle of the island either in the water or around it.(and I'm sure I missed some)...and the comorant chicks are getting BIG! There were even a couple of pelican nests up high.

Do go, and have a great time!

This sounds amazing. I'd love to hear the details/cost/departure area. We're staying 6 mi. north, at 18 Degrees.

Thanks
Penny
