Strange sea creature

Does anyone know what this is? It's in a plastic cup (for scale).

I believe it is a flying fish, perhaps a juvenille?

Excellent research Seashell. I have had these fish actually fly onto my boat. They never cease to amaze me at the distance and speed that they can travel. BTW they make great Mahi Mahi Bait smile

Bill, One night when rag girl was on watch she let out a scream. One flew on board and hit her right in the head. It tangled in her hair. I ran up from down below expecting much worse. grin They use to land on deck every once in a while.

I guess they would be good for bait but they are great eating. I used to buy them by the bag in supermarkets in Trinidad.

For Mahi Mahi I always used a blue lure and if I sailed by some floating sea weed dragging one behind the boat chances are there would be fish for supper.

Oh, the memories. heart

Ragman: the best bait is Ballyhoo, but Flying fish are a good substitute. I know the feeling that rag girl experienced. I have had them slam into me as well, Never had them tangle in my hair tho. I guess that's because I don't have that much hair. but I have been hit by them, Very disconcerting especially at night.
I have never eaten them, But I'll take your word for it. Any fast moving lure ( you use blue, I am partial to orange, or orange /red) will attract Mahi Mahi. and YES!!! floating debris, weeds etc will draw them to it. The reason is that Bait fish concentrate under the weeds/debris for shade. The Mahi Mahi know this and can always be found in a weed-line.

Squid are heavy. I seem to remember reading years ago of a woman who died when she was hit by a flying squid.

But thanks for the answers Seashell and all of you.
