Ariel Rosado

Tonight, family, friends and the cycling community are grieving the immeasurable loss of young Ariel Rosado. The twenty-eight year old was killed in a terrible traffic accident just before midnight on Saturday. It happened at the roundabout near SMART when Rosado and his cycling friend Marlon Castillo were heading into the City. Rosado, a National Road Champ himself, was also well known to this station, having appeared as co-host on our morning show and more recently as a special commentator during Holy Saturday's Cross Country coverage. Rosado, the son of former K.H.M.H. C.E.O., Dr. Alvaro, and Dorla Rosado, was employed at the law firm Courtenay Coye since 2008 as an Attorney in Training. News Five's Isani Cayetano reports.

Winston Swift, Best Friend of Ariel Rosado

"At no time I would have thought that [and] even watching the vehicle crashing into the cement wall I thought you know what "me and Ariel [Rosado] wah laugh 'bout this and tell Marlon [Castillo] bwai yoh mess up yoh truck" and at no time I thought that he would have been dead."

Isani Cayetano, Reporting

An evening of socializing amongst best friends turned tragic on Saturday around eleven p.m. when former cyclist and budding attorney Ariel Rosado became the unfortunate victim of a fatal traffic accident near mile two on the Northern Highway.

Winston Swift

"We were coming down. We were hanging out at a house, you know. I was in a vehicle behind the [Toyota] Tacoma, well I was in front of the Tacoma actually before the accident occurred. I looked back [and] I saw the Tacoma coming and it overtook us [so] I told my friend who was driving the vehicle to pull on the side that we were on and let the Tacoma go We were approaching the roundabout and I didn't see how at that speed it would take the roundabout so I gave them as much space. I asked him [the driver of the vehicle] to give them as much space and he pulled on the side and the Tacoma passed us and it slammed into the fence. [It] went up, came down and then finally it stopped at the median."

The driver of the vehicle, twenty-three year old Marlon Castillo, a fellow cyclist with whom Rosado had been a passenger lost control of his pickup which careened violently off the traffic circle and hitting this concrete fence before coming to rest moments later. His best friend Winston who was following in a separate vehicle was the first respondent.

Winston Swift

"I quickly rushed over to the vehicle and the driver, Marlon Castillo, he just kept yelling to me that aux stick, the aux stick, the accelerator, the aux stick so I said okay [and I asked] where's Ariel and he said Ariel is in the vehicle. And I quickly ran and got him out of there and I put him in the vehicle and sent him to the hospital."

Despite their effort to immediately transport Rosado to the K.H.M.H. the twenty-eight year old would not survive the massive cranial impact he received during the collision. Ariel Rosado succumbed to his injuries less than an hour later.

"This is Ariel Rosado reporting for Channel Five from the start of the 2011 Cross Country Cycling Classic and we thank you for staying in tune with us and please continue staying tuned. We'll have full coverage for you. Saying goodbye from the start and we'll pick it up in a few minutes."

Baby Jamis, as he was known amongst his colleagues, rose to prominence in the late nineties with veteran cyclist Santiago Castillo Jr. as his mentor.

Santiago Castillo Jr., Former Coach, Jamis

Santiago Castillo Jr

"He surprised the entire cycling world in Belize when he beat Quinton [Hamilton] in the 2000 New Year's Krem Classic and stamped his authoritativeness in cycling with that victory. He later won the National Road Championship, I want to believe the year was 2001 and or 2002. But Ariel was the consummate team player and he and Jawmaine were the one-two punch."

Ariel Rosado (File: March 28th, 2002)

"At times it's rough because you have to sacrifice yourself, you have to work for others at times. But at other times it pays off, they work for you, you get the victory at times, so it can be rough at times. But like they keep on reminding me on this team, I'm still young, so for now I can sacrifice myself for men like Jawmaine or the seniors and then in two years time it'll be my turn when the team starts to work me and I can start to be the victor of the races, so it's worth it."

Winston Swift

"Well, I met Ariel Rosado in high school; it was [in] third form, you know, I was into cycling but not a professional cyclist. [I] just liked riding and I always wanted to end up riding with Ariel in a race and I had my chance in high school and we were kind of like rivals, you know. I always wanted to beat him but I wasn't nowhere around his caliber of riding so in third form I actually met up with Ariel and we became good friends from since third form, fourth form, sixth form. After sixth form, him going to study, coming back, working and we just kept a very close relationship."

a close relationship which ended in disaster. Castillo, who wasn't seriously injured, has since been served a notice of intended prosecution. Meanwhile Belize City police continue their investigation into the accident. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.

Castillo was formally arraigned this afternoon on a slew of charges; Manslaughter by Negligence, Causing Death by Careless Conduct, Driving Motor Vehicle without Due Care and Attention, Driving Motor Vehicle with Alcohol Concentration Above the Prescribed Limit and Driving an Unlicensed Motor Vehicle. The case was adjourned until June sixteenth and Castillo was granted bail of five thousand dollars. He is being represented by Attorney Richard "Dickie" Bradley.

A Star Shines No More

Tonight the city is still coming to terms with the passing of one of its promising young stars, 28 year old Ariel Rosado who died in a car accident on Saturday night - while his friend, elite cyclist Marlon Castillo was at the wheel. Ariel first rose to prominence in the late 90's as a prodigiously talented, well spoken, young cyclist. He delivered on that promise by winning or placing in multiple races including a victory in the KREM Classic in the year 2000 - when he was just 16!

Eventually though, Rosado left the sport he had gained such distinction in to go and study law. He completed his studies and was an associate at the Courtney Coye Law Practice at the time of his death.

It is a death which came unexpectedly on Saturday night when the Toyota Tacoma pickup he was a passenger in crashed violently at the PACT roundabout at mile two on the Northern Highway.

There are very many stories about what caused the crash, but reliable eyewitness accounts narrow it down to this: at about 10:45, Castillo came into the roundabout heading towards the city at an unmanageable speed; he lost control and the vehicle careened into a nearby cement fence - which, presumably, is where Rosado received massive head injuries - since the passenger side slammed the concrete fence.

Castillo has told friends that the accelerator pedal got stuck and he could not slow down the truck - which he had recently acquired. v His friend Winston Swift was travelling right behind Castillo's pickup and saw everything - he told Monica Bodden about it:.

Winston Swift
"I was at a house in Belama socializing, Marlon and Ariel came by. Ariel was requesting for me to be in his presence from Friday night but due to I had to work on Saturday. I was ready on Saturday night and he came around and we decided to come down to Belize City to go to a friend house. He and Marlon came together and they leave together. Me and a friend that was already there we left before them so we were ahead of them coming down the highway, passing Friendship Restaurant I saw Marlon vehicle the Tacoma coming with speed, so I tell my friend to pull on the side because these guys will hit the round-about. We pull on the side and the Tacoma just kept speeding and it hit the cement wall, I see like Marlon apply his brakes but all I smell was rubber. The vehicle hit the median and it stayed on the median and I told the guy that was driving to pull up to the vehicle and he stop right next to the vehicle. First thing as I look through the door and saw only Marlon sitting upright in the vehicle. So I ran to the vehicle and before I even tell Marlon anything Marlon; he says Swift - the aux peddle stick. I told him ok and he call out for Ariel. I went over and got him out and place him in a vehicle and send him to the hospital."

Monica Bodden
"At that time was he severely......?"

Winston Swift
"He had severe head injury from what I saw."

Monica Bodden
"So you took him out of the vehicle right?"

Winston Swift
"Yes I took him out of the vehicle to put him in a vehicle to send him to the hospital."

Monica Bodden
"You witness everything?"

Winston Swift
"Yes ma'am. To me I don't really think the guys were drunk or anything like that. While we were socializing Ariel took one drink. Like I said they came there for about half an hour before we left. I don't really know what the situation was before that, but they didn't seem totally drunk any at all. I took a hard blow just being my friend but to actually being on the scene I think that is like an extra blow for me but I don't want to the one to question God so I just it like it was his time. I don't know Marlon's feeling. He is my friend and I know Marlon took it hard because - put myself in Marlon's shoes, I would take it hard to if I was behind the wheel. Marlon is my good friend to and I plan to be here for Marlon and Marlon has a lot of us who are good friend to him and will be there for him."

Ariel Rosado had one daughter. He is the son of Dr. Alvaro Rosado, who is the former CEO of the KHMH, and Dorla Rosado of Director of Haven House for Battered Women.

And according to police, driving under the influence was a factor in the accident. Today 23 year old Marlon Castillo appeared in court where he was arraigned on charges of manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving without due care and attention, driving under the influence of alcohol above the prescribed limit and using an unlicensed motor vehicle.

No plea was taken as it is an indictable offence which will be tried in the Supreme Court if there is enough evidence. Castillo was released on bail of five thousand dollars and the case was adjourned until July 15th.

Ariel Rosado Remembered With Scholarship Initiative

Well known cyclist and corporate law scholar Ariel Rosado died in a tragic traffic accident in May 2011.

And now his family has committed to keep his memory alive by launching the Ariel Rosado Memorial Education Foundation. The Foundation's main purpose is to provide funding for educational scholarships and sporting activities to encourage Belizean youths to develop healthy minds in healthy bodies.

It was publicly launched today at a press conference - which was tinged with more than a little sadness - but also a spirit of resolve. One of the Foundation's founding members Terry Gordon explained how the scholarship initiative came about:

Terry Gordon
"The Ariel Rosado Memorial Education Foundation has been established to commemorate the life of an outstanding Belizean youth who lost his life in a traffic accident three weeks after completing his 28 birthday."

"The foundation has been established to raise and manage funds to provide high school scholarships and sporting opportunities for deserving Belizean youth. The foundation hopes to realize this goal through corporate sponsorship, individual donations, individual and coperate pledges fundraising through the annual ride."

"The main fundraising activity of the foundation will be an annual ride to be held on the 3rd Saturday after the holy day; the Annual Cross Country Cycling Race."

Dr. Alvaro Rosado, Father
"We were talking about 20 scholarships a year and that sounds good for the first year because that is $40,000.00 but when you go to the 4th year; you are talking about $160,000.00. We are planning to see that every scholarship child goes through the entire scholarship process and if at all possible to follow Ariel's footsteps and continue on to university with any assistance that we can give.

"When this meeting started and even up to this moment the Ariel Rosado Memorial Education Foundation has had a lot of support and well wishes but not a single penny in its coffers."

"I have been informed that this is about to change. Since the first donors to the foundation will be presenting their contributions to the treasurer Mr. Bruce Sanchez Jr."

A total of $3,792 was pledged by supporters at the Press Conference.
