The community leader in Independence told the crew and passengers in no uncertain terms, at least three times, they should get off the boat and weather the storm in a nice home they would provide on terra firma in the village. They declined. The Captain, at whose doorstep responsibility ultimately lies, told the passengers they would be much more comfortable on board, eating their curried shrimp, sleeping in rooms with a/c and flush toilets. Crew were threatened with dismisal if they opted for the sane decision to leave the boat. Saw the Captain for a few days following the tragedy at a Belize City hotel til Peter Hughes Wave Dancer folks whisked him out of Belize before criminal charges could be levied. Boats are not the right place to base during a hurricane, I hope we all know that now.
