Friday, 24 February 2006
Organisers of the race have added extra safety precautions this year including a change in rule 21 making it mandatory for paddlers to wear a life-vest at all times. Special training has also been extended to medics and rescuers, preparing them for any eventuality they may encounter on water as well as on land.
March 3 marks the beginning of the much anticipated 9th La Ruta Maya Challenge. The gruelling race will last four days. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for Thursday, March 2 at 5:00P.M. at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel in the Cayo district. An outline of the rules and conditions of the race, a presentation of La Ruta Maya Theme Song, the crowning of the Grand Master and the showing of Belize Teveís documentary on the race are all a part of the agenda. And for those seeking more entertainment, organisers have prepared a Cultural Night on Burns Avenue including live entertainment by local artists and Titiman Flores. The deadline for team registration is Monday, February 27 and the cost is
$250 per team. Late registration will cost $300. The registration booth will close at 4:00P.M. on March 2. Teams also have the option of registering online. The registration form can be downloaded, completed and faxed to #824-3075. The fee can be deposited to the La Ruta Maya Account #70037 at any Scotiabank Branch.
Committed to keeping the environment clean, organisers have paid keen attention to the river by initiating clean-up drives and tree planting along the riverside. This year an inventory of past plantings will be taken and an additional 300 Mahogany trees will be planted.
La Ruta Maya wishes all participants luck and thanks their sponsors for their generous contributions.
