ENERGY LIGHT BULB PROGRAMME ALMOST COMPLETED

Dec 13, 2006

The energy-saving light bulb programme is almost complete. According to
Cuban Ambassador, Eugenio Martinez, crews changing the bulbs are now on the
last week of their mission.

Ambassador Eugenio Martinez: Cuban Ambassador to Belize

"The team is in San Ignacio, Orange Walk then Corozal, we are expected to
finish next week, close to one hundred seventy thousand bulbs to finish
this."

"For people who may have missed receiving one of the bulbs, can they still
do that?"

Ambassador Eugenio Martinez: Cuban Ambassador to Belize

"Yes we have a stock here at the Embassy so if somebody wants to send their
bulbs they have to bring the incandescent ones and then we give them the
bulbs. You see we pass by houses that are closed we know people are working
and sometimes we return and if they are not there we keep moving to other
areas. I know they are people who are working, that's why their houses are
closed that's why we have opened up this opportunity to go to the Embassy
and retrieve the bulbs there,"

Marion Ali: Love FM

"Ambassador where and when are the incandescent bulbs destroyed?"

Ambassador Eugenio Martinez: Cuban Ambassador to Belize

"They are destroyed usually at the BDF camp in Price Barracks."

The project was a joint one between the governments of Belize and Cuba,
whereby Cuba provided energy-saving light bulbs for the entire country in
exchange for the incandescent bulbs that people were using. Meanwhile, a
caller to our morning show this morning has alleged that some of the bulbs
that some of the bulbs that were allotted for the Toledo District were sold
to the stores by B-D-F soldiers. Belize Defense Force, Major Ganney Dortch
says the B-D-F is currently investigating to see if the allegation may be
true.

Major Ganney Dortch:

"Our team headed by Major David Jones went to Punta Gorda to install the
light bulbs as was agreed upon. In Punta Gorda however what happen was that
the BDF signed it over to the Alcaldes and everything is on record. Based
on the allegations this morning what has happened is that we are presently
investigating the matter we are looking at all our paper works which
clearly have on it the bulbs which were received, the bulbs that were
issued and we are looking at that closely to see if by any chance the
allegation is true."
