Wednesday, July 25, 2007

Belize's national development, investment and culture ministry has signed a US$44,081 contract with UK engineering firm Halcrow Group to prepare bidding documents for a project to upgrade rural roads, according to a government statement.

Tender documents for the project are slated for completion by the end of September and will enable the government to meet EU requirements for receiving 1.0mn euros (US$1.4mn) in funding for the project through the Belize Rural Development Program, the statement read.

The project will be to upgrade 197km of 35 rural roads in the Toledo, Cayo and Belize districts, and is expected to begin by early 2008.

In addition to preparing tender documents for the project, Halcrow will carry out cost-benefit, feasibility and environmental studies, and provide technical support for the project, a ministry official told BNamericas.

The timeline for the works, as well as their expected cost, will be known upon completion of the Halcrow studies, the official said, adding that bidding will be open to international firms.
