DETAILS The Placencia Peninsula of southern Belize - a narrow, 12-mile-long spit of land with white-sand Caribbean beaches on its eastern coast and a lagoon to its west - has been gaining attention in recent years with the arrival of developments like Francis Ford Coppola's Turtle Inn. Cocoplum is a 224-acre project about seven miles north of the peninsula's tip that stretches from one coast to the other. Its plans consist of a boutique hotel, 110 homesites and 100 condominiums. The condominiums, called the Villas at Cocoplum (www.thevillasatcocoplum.com), are being developed separately from the rest of the project; now under construction, they range from two to four bedrooms with prices starting at $425,000. The homesites, most of which are about a half acre, will be along the project's 4,500 feet of beach, inland and fronting the lagoon. The beachfront hotel is planned to have 50 cabanas for guest rooms, the restaurant and the spa, and it will run the small marina on the lagoon. More than half the site has been set aside to remain undeveloped. The country is home to numerous Maya ruin sites, and the largest continuous barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, known for its exceptional snorkeling and scuba diving, is off its coast. The airport in Belize City, about three hours north, has daily flights from the United States. There is a heliport at the development, and connections are also available from Belize City to a small airport on the peninsula.
