San Benito Poite bridge under four feet of water

There is a threat of flooding over the weekend. According to the Met Service, water levels in most part of the country, primarily in the Toledo, Stann Creek and in the Belize and Orange Walk Districts will rise tonight and possibly over the weekend due to heavy showers and thunderstorms projected over Yucatan, El Peten and Belize. The Met is appealing to residents in low lying areas near rivers, streams and lagoons to been on the alert and prepare to evacuate to high ground if necessary. This is not good news for southern Belize where the San Benito Poite Bridge is already under three to four feet of water. According to reports from San Benito which is one of the most remote villages in the south, the bridge has been submerged since Tuesday and teachers and high school students from both the Toledo Community College and Julian Cho Technical High School have been taking turns crossing the river in a small wooden canoe from as early as three in the morning. The current of the Moho River which flows through the San Benito Poite Village is strong and on Tuesday, its School Principal, Leonardo Cal, said that he nearly lost one of his teachers when he tried to cross the river to make it to school. Villagers are asking the government for urgent attention to this life threatening situation.
