I think you may have missed the point Dan.

In another picture, Elbert had purple ink on his finger, hence the Barney reference laugh

The guitar Paul played early on was a Rex, but not in that picture: Hohners were very popular (cheap and available) at the time in England, and were the makers of Pauls Violin Bass

I don't think it would be a Gibson at that stage of their careers due to cost and the fact that it was latter replaced by the "Rex"

It's rarely rocket science, it's usually just math: then again if you can't do the math.......
