Belmopan, 7 November 2008.- The Embassy of Mexico informs that the painting exhibition "Belize Bowl Race" by Belizean artist Pen Cayetano was open on Thursday, 6 November 2008, at the Institute of Mexico in Belize (IMB)
The exhibition was inaugurated by Ms. Diane Haylock, President of the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), and was attended, among other personalities, by members of the Diplomatic corps, government officials and artists. Mr. Cayetano and his group of musicians played some of his pieces and performed traditional Garifuna dance.
Pen Cayetano, painter, singer, songwriter, percussionist and guitarist, is the leading cultural revivalist and Ambassador of Art & Music for the Garinagu, formerly known as Black Caribs (mixed African and Carib Indian).
Born in 1954 in Dangriga, the cultural capital of the Garinagu, on the south-central coast of Belize, Cayetano is a self-taught painter and musician. Punta Rock, the new musical sound which combines the rhythms and sounds of traditional Garifuna music with elements of modern rock, was created by him on the eve of Independence in 1981, which became famous through his Turtleshell Band.
In his paintings he portrays scenes of everyday life in Belize, and especially aspects of his own Garifuna folklore, history and culture.
The exhibition will be open to the public from 6 to 27 November 2008. Entrance is FREE. The IMB is located at the corner of Newtown Barracks and Wilson Street, in Belize City.
