Island Ferry Celebrates Ten Years of Service to San Pedro

Island Ferry has been servicing San Pedro for the last ten years as the main water taxi service and also acts as the emergency response team for Ambergris Caye. They have responded to body recovery, heart attacks, broken bones, dive accidents, head trauma, anaphylactic shock, severe fish poisoning, gunshot wounds, skydiving accidents and in one case assisting doctors in delivering a new born inside the island ferry office on Fido's dock. Island Ferry has also medivac people to Belize City at no charge.

Island Ferry has also helped with evacuations during hurricanes and never charged for medical emergencies. This service is made possible and will continue to be made possible with the support of every Island Ferry passenger. Over the years Island Ferry has supplied various needs and services to the island above and beyond Island Ferry's primary purpose of transporting locals and guest to all points on Ambergris Caye.

All these vital functions are performed free of charge as a service to the island. In the case of life threatening medical emergencies Island Ferry ceases all scheduled runs to respond to the crises. The office is turned into a command and control center staffed by medically trained dispatchers and the Island Ferry fleet is directed immediately to the medical emergency where medically trained captains provide medical first response and evacuation to one of the Island MD's.

To perform these vital medical functions Island Ferry staff has received firefighting training by the San Pedro Fire Department, swift water rescue, marine first response, wilderness medical training, and confined space rescue training by Global Medical Rescue Services. Island Ferry staff also regularly receives basic medical training by Bandage International, a group of doctors and EMT's from Nova Scotia, Canada. Island Ferry's office is equipped with and up to date inventory of emergency medical supplies, such as backboards, Oxygen, neck collars, blood sugar meters, air splints, sam splints, defibulators, respirators, a wide assortment of bandages and much more.

Recently Island Ferry received certificates of appreciation for their work in assisting victims of the flooding in the Belize Rural North District during tropical depression 16 in 2008 from the Honorable Manual Heridia, Minister of Tourism and Aviation and the district coordinator of NEMO.

Island Ferry is run by captain Sterling Vorus. He is a US Coast Guard Master. He holds' a masters License for the country of Panama, Bahamas and is currently being approved for Sierra Leone as well. Captain Vorus has operated large hydrographic research vessels all over the world. We are also involved in organizations such as NEMO and ACER.
