As you may know, the lionfish has moved into Belizean waters. It's a pretty fish but it's relatively deadly to other marine life. The invasion is being taken seriously.

A campaign has begun (here, in Florida and other places) to educate the public about how to catch and cook this fish. The hope is that by doing "targeted overfishing" this species can be either controlled or (better yet) wiped out in our waters.

To this end the first-ever SAN PEDRO LIONFISH TOURNAMENT IS SCHEDULED -

San Pedro's Lion Fish Tournament on Wed.
A Lion Fish Tournament has been scheduled for Wednesday, January 19th, 2011. Join the fight in managing the invasive Lion Fish. First and second prizes, as well as prizes most lion fish - largest lion fish and smallest lion fish. There will be an outreach workshop on Tuesday night at 6 pm at the Lions Den were rules and registration will take place.
Wednesday activities will include cleaning and handling demonstration, FREE grilled lion fish, FREE barbecued lion fish, as well as a Happy Hour between 4-6 pm.
