On Saturday afternoon the Belize Coast Guard intercepted a large catch of undersized lobster, off season conch and sea cucumbers. The catch was found on board a twenty-five foot fiber glass Mexican Skiff. Hampton Gamboa, Supervisor of the Conservation Compliance Unit at the Fisheries Department says the illegal catch is now in their possession. Gamboa says the department is concerned about illegal catch given the sizes of the lobster and conchs. The catch also included ninety-nine sea cucumbers. While the season for the product closed officially this weekend, the fishermen were unable to produce a license for the catch and will also be prosecuted for it. The fishermen face fines anywhere from twenty to thirty dollars per individual pieces of lobster and conch.
