Robbery and Shooting in Placencia
A robbery at Mango’s Restaurant and Bar in the Maya Beach area of Placencia took a violent turn when the culprit opened fire on the owner. Businessman, fifty-six year old Frank Da Silva, reported to police that shortly before ten o’clock on Saturday night, he was at Mango’s along with two customers when men entered. One of the robbers was armed with a handgun and demanded the money from cash register. Da Silva complied and handed over one thousand dollars in cash. Before they escaped, the gunman fired several shots at Da Silva; one hit him on the lower abdomen. The businessman drew his own weapon and returned fired, but missed. He spent the weekend hospitalized and discharged himself this morning. Da Silva told News Five this was the third time his business has been robbed.
And there was another armed holdup in the south on Saturday night. Just over an hour before Mango’s was targeted, Life Style Store in Independence Village was also robbed by two men. Storeowner, twenty-three year old Yogyata Mohnani says that at ten minutes after o’clock, she was along with her brother-in-law Hitesh Mohnani, when two men entered the store. One of them pointed a firearm at Yogyata, saying “this is a hold up”. The men then stole several cell phones and assorted electronics, valued at four thousand, four hundred dollars as well as three thousand dollars in cash and then escaped. Shortly after the incident, Carl Reneau, a resident of Iguana Street in Belize City, was detained. Police are looking for the second suspect and investigations continue into both robberies.
