People's memories seem to be very short, this happens every year. We used sit after dinner at Lamanai and watch the fires across the lagoon at night at this time of year.

Some of the fires are manmade just before the rainy season to generate new grass for the deer to feed on (and be hunted) when the rains come and bring up the new grass shoots. Many were accidental due to burning trash or uncontrolled cane burning, some were just plain old heat lightning (when you get a strike a few hundred yards away in bright sunshine I can tell you from experience you will move your ass fast for shelter).

Just for the conspiracy theorists out there; Carmelita had just as many fires as anywhere else through the years (you know who you are).

We seem to be in a drought year again which isn't helping but the rains should be here in 2 to 3 weeks.
