Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) advises customers that strong wind gusts and the passage of a lightning storm over sections of the country on Thursday, March 6 caused unplanned power interruptions throughout the country. These interruptions in power supply ranged between 23 minutes to approximately 2 hours in most areas.

The first series of unplanned power interruptions experienced in Belize at 2:46 p.m. yesterday were as a result of bad weather passing over Quintana Roo, Mexico which tripped Comisin Federal de Electricidad's (CFE) 230 kV transmission line that supplies Belize. This caused an interruption that affected Belize's entire electrical system. Power supply was restored to all areas between 3:08 p.m. and 3:26 p.m.

Shortly after 4:00 p.m. yesterday, strong winds in the Cayo District caused a tree to fall on high voltage lines, which resulted in a power interruption ranging 45 minutes to 2 hours in some sections of San Ignacio Town.

A lightning storm passing over the Belize District caused damage to the distribution system in Belize City, resulting in power interruptions affecting a majority of Belize City between 6:20 p.m. and 8:35 p.m.

BEL thanks customers for their patience while our employees worked diligently to respond to these weather-related power outages and restore the system during these interruptions.
