The San Pedro Junior Sailing Club wins both Buttonwood Bay and Baron Bliss Harbor Regattas

It was an exciting weekend for sailing clubs from across the country as they traveled to Belize City to participate in the annual Buttonwood Bay and Baron Bliss Harbor Regatta. Both regattas are Belize Sailing Association (BzA) national ranking regattas and all the sailors were out for the win. But it was San Pedro Junior Sailing Club (SPJSC) who took the grand first place trophy for both regattas.

Held on Saturday, March 8th, the Buttonwood Bay Regatta was hosted by the Belize Sea Scouts. 49 young sailors participated in a series of six races in the optimist class. Participating clubs included SPJSC, Sea Scouts, Belize City Sailing Club (BCSC), Corozal Bay Sailing Club (CBSC), Placencia Sailing Club (PSC) and San Pedro Sailing Club (SPR). The competition was fierce but in the end it was Jerdon Anderson from SPJSC who took the first place prize with 13 points. Second place went to Antonio Ricardez Jr. of BCSC with 15 points, followed by Blanca Vasquez of SPJSC in third place, also with 15 points. Christian Trejo of SPJSC came in fourth place with 18 points and Kevin Velasquez of SPJSC took fifth place with 22 points. Top ten sailors for the Buttonwood Bay regatta included: Gorge Olivarez (SPR) in 6th, Trent Hardwick (Sea Scouts) in 7th, Nashira Ricardez (BCSC) in 8th, Faith Noel (SPJSC) in 9th and Jasmine Campos (CBSC) in 10th. Other participating member of the SPJSC include: David Puc in 11th, Samantha Vasquez in 18th, Beverly Medrano in 20th, Kathryn Salinas in 23rd, Katie Maxson in 27th, Lucy Veralls in 32nd, and Gabbi Knox in 36th. SPR members include: Sarah White in 14th, Mitchell Sersland 15th, David Syme in 47th and Caroline Sersland in 48th.


On Sunday, March 9th, the 86th annual Baron Bliss Harbor Regatta was held as part of the opening events for Reef Weeks. The regatta was presided over by Governor General Sir Colville Young. The Baron Bliss Harbor Regatta consisted of four races with 47 participating sailors in the optimist class. Once again SPJSC claimed the first place as Kevin Vasquez took the win with three points. Second place went to Antonio Ricardez Jr. of BCSC with seven points. Blanca Vasquez of SPJSC came in third with 13 points, followed by Trent Hardwick of Sea Scouts in fourth with 14 points and Faith Noel of SPJSC in fifth with 15 points. Top ten finishers included: Gorge Olivarez (SPR) in 6th, Jerdon Anderson (SPJSC) in 7th, Patrick Rhamdas (PSC) in 8th, Christian Trejo (SPJSC) in 9th and Tyler Garbutt (PSC) in 10th. Other participating members of SPJSC included: DavinPuc in 11th, Samantha Velasquez in 13th, Beverly Medrano in 14th, Kathryn Salinas in 17th, Lucy Verralls in 20th, Katie Maxson in 25th, and Gabbi Knox in 35th place. SPR members included: Sarah White in 14th, Mitchell Sersland in 30th, David Syme in 46th and Caroline Sersland in 47th.
