DFC hosts Customer Appreciation Day
On Friday, September 26th, the Development Finance Corporation (DFC) held a Customer Appreciation Day as part of its 51st anniversary celebrations. The event was held simultaneously across the country and encouraged customers and non-customers to visit the branch office for an opportunity to receive information on loans, interest rates and payment plans, and even a chance to win great prizes! According to Nalleli Gilharry, representative of DFC San Pedro Branch, the event is a way to give back to the community. "As part of Customer Appreciation Day we are offering our customers the opportunity to receive huge discounts on their accounts. But this event wasn't only for our customers; we also took the opportunity to share information on loans and promotions with the community. One lucky visitor even won a brand new Samsung Galaxy cellular phone!" said Gilharry. A 50% discount on process and application fees was offered to persons wanting to apply for a loan.

San Pedro signed on to become a Sustainable and Child Friendly Municipality
The San Pedro Town Council joined other municipalities and cities throughout the country to sign on to an agreement to become a Sustainable and Child Friendly Municipality. The signing of certificate demonstrates the municipal government's commitment to ensure that during the next 16 months, the town would adopt policies that will ensure that every child lives in a safe, healthy and crime-free environment. The initiative, which was launched simultaneously in every town countrywide on Friday September 26th, is being spearheaded by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Belize Mayor's Association and the Government of Belize. The Sustainable and Child Friendly Municipality program identifies the steps to build a local system of governance committed to fulfilling children's rights. It is within the scope of the Convention of the Rights of a Child which Belize signed on to in 1990. The framework document outlines the "building blocks" that need to be adopted to become a Child Friendly Municipality. These building blocks include structures and activities that municipal government agencies should have in place to engage children's involvement. These measures will ensure a children's rights perspective in all relevant decision-making and equal rights of access to basic services.

Tourists Capture The Terrifying Minutes After Danny Conorquie Was Shot
Special Constable Danny Conorquie, he is the first Belizean lawman to be killed in the line of duty, apparently by a Guatemalan civilian - and tonight, five days after he was killed, the 20 year old is still making national headlines. There was a motorcade and protest at the Benque Viejo border today - and we'll tell you about that shortly. But first to a video that was posted on Vimeo last night by a group of tourists who were at Caracol when Conorquie was killed by Guatemalan bandits. Their video is the most arresting footage we've seen, and we air it un-edited tonight. Government Battles Ashcroft Alliance Over Universal Guarantee
Today in the Supreme Court, the Ashcroft Alliance and the Government of Belize were back at it - and this time they were arguing over one of the seminal events that led to the demise of the Musa Administration. That's the publicly guaranteed 33.5 million dollar Belize Bank loan for the private hospital formerly known as Universal Health Services. In 2007, it was revealed that Former Prime Minister Said Musa and then Attorney General Francis Fonseca had signed a loan note guaranteeing the debt for UHS without Cabinet's knowledge and without taking it to Parliament. PM Musa eventually - and without public disclosure - used a 10 million US dollar grant from Taiwan and another 10 million US from Venezuela to pay off the debt. The Bank then sold loaned that money to the Healthcare Partners group and sold the hospital for 39 million. That should have put the matter to bed but it didn't, and the Bank still wants back its money. It says that's because $20 million dollars that former PM Musa had paid to settle the debt, had to be returned to Government and so the settlement agreement collapsed and the Government remains on the hook. The London Court of International Arbitration agreed with the Bank and now it is going to the Supreme Court of Belize to try and enforce the award here.

Cop Sent To Jail For Attempt To Corrupt Another
Police Corporal Darius Martinez is spending the first night of an 18-month sentence after he was convicted before the Chief Magistrate of attempting to corrupt a public officer. The allegation was that he tried to bribe a member of the Gang Suppression Unit to give him information about the investigation into the infamous John McAfee case. The main witness in the trial against Martinez was Woman Police Constable Stacey Smith who testified that on May 11, 2012, Martinez contacted her by cell phone and asked her if she wanted to make some money. She says that Martinez didn't go into detail about what she would have to do to earn that money until they had a second conversation, which she recorded. That recording was presented before the court and admitted into evidence. In that conversation, Martinez wanted WPC Smith to tell him what the GSU found at McAfee's residence outside of Orange Walk Town in May 2012. He was also interested to know about a diary which was supposedly confiscated.

Alleged Park Shooter Jailed For Gang Membership
Tonight, 23 year-old Michael McDonald, a King Street resident, is at the Belize Central Prison after he was taken to court for a very public shooting, which terrified BTL park-goers early on Sunday morning, around 3:00 am. According to police, they responded to a shooting in the vicinity of the BTL Park. They caught McDonald with a .38 firearm, and they also retrieved 5 expended shells. No one was injured, but police charged him with causing public terror, discharging a firearm in public, keeping an unlicensed firearm. Additionally, they say that he claimed to be a member of the George Street Gang, and so, he was charged with professing to be a member of a criminal gang. He was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate, Ann Marie Smith, and due to the nature of the offences, he was remanded into custody until November 17, even though he pleaded not guilty.

Robber Said He Wanted A Blood Test
Yesterday, a man who went to a medical lab asking for a blood test ended up robbing the lab. At 1:15, two men went into the Belize Medical Center on St. Thomas Street. One of them said he needed a blood test and went inside to have it administered. But before he could sit down, he pulled out a gun and robbed the 65 year old lab technician. Two women who were in the waiting area dashed outside the door ads the men grabbed the money from the cash pan. The owner of the lab tried to grab one of them on the way out, but he turned the gun on him - and the owner let him go. No one was hurt and police have no suspects.

Daylight Downtown Robbery
There was a brazen broad daylight robbery in the heart of downtown Belize City this morning, but this time it wasn't a business that was targeted it was a customer. We found out that the customer was so badly shaken up that he refused to give a statement to the police because he feared his and his family's safety..

Fatal Accident Outside Free Zone
Yesterday afternoon there was a fatal accident at the Northern border. It happened at around 4:00 pm when Mexican watchman 37 year old Jose Benigno Lopez, shot out of the free zone at high speed in a Ford Ranger pickup. His passenger Tilo Lopez was treated for minor bruises and a small cut wound to the head and was released.

The Art Of Defensive Driving
Many of you who have been driving for over 15 years may think enrolling in a driving workshop, is useless and maybe even laughable, after so many years on the road. But you might be surprised to find out that some very seasoned drivers are benefiting from a defensive driving workshop. Courtney Weatherburne has the story. The workshop lasts for 4 days: Two days of theory and two days of practical. About 24 drivers are attending.

Is El Pilar Another Archeological Hotspot On Border?
At the top of the news, we showed you the dramatic video footage captured by the tourists who were at Caracol when Danny Conorquie was killed. The conservationists and tour guides who operate in border hotspots, like the archeological reserve areas, say that Conorquie is not the first law man to be shot at, just the first to be killed. The Cayo Tour Guides Association was very vocal about the lack of tight security at the Caracol Archeological Site, but they stress that this is not the only historic Mayan site that remains under pressure by illegal border activities. Today, after the protest for Danny at the border, they took the media to the El Pilar Mayan Ruins inside the national park which is under the jurisdiction of NICH. They say that for years the site has been under pressure by Guatemalan border bandits who target them and their guests when they visit El Pilar. Our team arrived shortly before news time, and will have a full look at the problem they face tomorrow, but here's an excerpt of our discussion with the tour guides:

Chiquibul, Security Problems Since Forever
And while El Pilar is a hotspot - Chiquibul - with its vast forested area, its bounteous timber stock and its gold reservesare a cauldron. 7News was the first media house to go embedded with the Friends for Conservation of Development in 2009 - and sound the alarm about the security and conservation issues inside the Chiquibul. Since then our teams have gone inside the Chiquibul many more than any other media house. Tonight, we look back at our first engagement in 2009 - which is a very small snapshot of how dangerous and difficult law enforcement in Chiquibul can be: Jules Vasquez Reporting, "He has a machete; he has a weapon" those were the words of the BDF as they chased down Benigno Garcia and captured him here - 600 metres from the Guatemalan border in the Caracol Archaeological Park. The BDF caught him but the police on the patrol had the power of arrest. Garcia was searched - while the park ranger for Friends of Conservation and Development unloaded his 22 rifle which carried 6 live rounds. Garcia's dogs looked around confused - while the BDF brought his makeshift knapsack into the open area where they questioned Garcia.

Getting Brands Up To Standard
If you are into shopping, you certainly have your favorite brands that you purchase on a regular basis. Well, you better start looking beyond brand loyalty to the possible threats the consumption and usage of some of these products may have on you. Many of these products may have harmful substances or undeclared or uncertified ingredients. The partners in the CARICOM Rapid Alert System for the Exchange of Information on Dangerous (non- food) Consumer Goods met today to educate members states on strategies to regulate this issue and to get those harmful goods off the market. McClauren says that efforts are being made to link CARREX CARICOM with the OAS information system to facilitate a broader sharing of data on this issue.

Maya Leaders Meet PM
The Maya Leaders Alliance met with the Prime Minister in Belmopan last Thursday to say that they are willing to engage with the oil company US Capital Energy and the Government, but on certain terms. It is a follow up on a letter from the Alcaldes' Assembly notifying Government that the Alcaldes are developing a proposal for consent agreements by oil development and other extractive industries for activities on Maya traditional lands. A statement says, quote, "This proactive initiative by the Maya People manifests our commitment to explore opportunities for constructive, respectful, and good faith engagement with the Government of Belize and extractive companies on Maya traditional lands, looking forward to a future in which the legal status of those lands is no longer in dispute." End quote.

Video Of When Danny Conorqui Is Shot Presumably By Guatemalans Goes Viral
There is still much to be uncovered in the death of Danny Conorquie who was fatally wounded at the Caracol Mayan Site. He was buried on Sunday and there has been much controversy over the incident. Five days after his death, a video is released online by tourists who were at the site at the moment of the shooting. It appears the video was shot minutes after Conorquie was killed. The incident alone sent shock waves across the country as the initial reports were that he died at the hands of illegal Guatemalan Xateros. While there seems to be some confusion now as to what really happened or who pulled the trigger, the images that were captured by the visitors to the site are unnerving. According to the information we gathered, the video was shot by Austrian and Turkish expats as they visited the archaeological site. The video is edited and starts off with the introduction that reads, "Caracol is a Mayan archeological site remotely located near the Guatemalan Border in Belize. On September 25th 2014, we were there observing the site from the top of the pyramid." The introduction was followed by the sounds of shots ringing. Here is a look at that video. We inform our viewers though that we have made some adjustments to it in respect to the Conorquie family and other Belizeans in the video.

Belizeans Demonstrate At Western Border For Justice For Danny Conorqui
Following the execution style killing of 20 year old Special Constable Denny Conorquie on Thursday at the Caracol Archeological Site, much public debate and outpouring of support to his family has been raised. While his death is reportedly at the hands of Guatemalan bandits, San Ignacio Police are still unable to confirm if that is indeed the case but are looking at all possible angles. And today, in a showing of social justice and solidarity, over a hundred men and women converged at the Macal River Park where they travelled to the western border to stage a peaceful demonstration. With placards and signs that read 'Justice for Danny' and the Belizean Flag in hand, it was a symbolic showing of solidarity among Belizeans and a zero policy message to our Guatemalan counterparts that we, as a nation, will not stand and take it.

ASR/BSI And GOB Continues Negotiation Before Crop Opens
The discussions on the future of the sugar industry continue and yesterday representatives of the government, including Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega, met with representatives of the BSI/ASR group. Mac McLachlan, international advisor for the ASR group spoke with us after the meeting siting that it was more of an informative session with the government officials. Mac McLachlan - International Advisor, ASR Group"It was an opportunity to share among the industry stakeholders the real challenges ahead and that the industry has in Belize, we were able to see what is happening in the external market particular in the EU market where the sugar prices are falling very rapidly and we were able to look at what we need to do in Belize to overcome those issues and there is a whole of interconnected problems but last week we have to improve on our yields sugar cane here, the productivity of that cane to reduce the cost of producing sugar in order to be competitive, the EU market had come down a lot more rapidly when perhaps when we were expecting and we need to be working right now to be preparing for all of those issues and I think the issue on an agreement between BSCFA and BSI and I think we all understood and we were all clear that the crop is only eight weeks away and presently there is no agreement and it is imperative to have that agreement in time to start."

BWU And IUF To Hold A Three Days Workshop On Components Of Sugar Industry

Ramiro Gongora- President BWU "Well, we are affiliated for the past ten year I would say and we actually pay our dues on a yearly basis to them and this is paid on the amount of membership and it is forward way in Geneva so the BWU has to make a lot of transactions to cover the fees so that it could be forward to Geneva."

Corozal Police Investigates FTA Involving The Live Of Mexican National
Last night on our news cast we reported on the fatal traffic accident that occurred near the Las Vegas Hotel and Casino located in the area of the Corozal Commercial Free Zone. The incident claimed the life of a Mexican national. Reporter Victor Castillo has the details to the incident in the following report. Victor Castillo - Reporting Tragedy struck the Perez family a little after 4:00 yesterday evening when they were informed that their loved one, 37 year old Mexican National Jose Benigno Perez, lost his life in a traffic accident. The tragic accident occurred here, near the Las Vegas Hotel and Casino located in the vicinity of the free zone, when Perez reportedly lost control of his vehicle which flipped several times in the air. Oceana Issues 2014 Ocean Hero Award
On Saturday, September 27th, Biologist Lisa Carne and manatee expert Jamal Galvez were formally recognized as OCEANA's 2014 Ocean Hero Award Winners. In 2006, Carne witnessed the devastating impact of Hurricane Iris in Southern Belize and was deeply troubled by the vulnerability of Belize's marine environment to climate change through rising sea temperatures and stronger storm surges. Using the Laughing Bird Caye National Park as a natural laboratory, Carne established a coral "nursery" in attempt to restore critically endangered Acropora corals. Today, with support from the communities of Independence and Placencia, her "Fragments of Hope" project has more than five thousand out-plants in more than eighteen sub-sites.As for Galvez he has been a self-proclaimed "manatee protector" since age eleven. To date he is a recognized expert of manatees and his affection for the animal has propelled the need to protect manatees into national consciousness since they are an endangered species due to threats like boat collisions, destructive gear like nets and even poverty.

COLA Expresses Outrage For Murder of Danny Conorqui
On Friday the Peoples United Party issued a release expressing outrage for the killing of Danny Conorquie and demanding that a full investigation be launched into the death of the 20 year old. But the PUP is not the only organization clamoring for justice. So is Citizens Organized for Liberty through Action, COLA. Today the organization, via a press release, announced that they will join the Belize People's Front at a press conference and a demonstration scheduled for tomorrow at the western border. In the release, COLA also chastises the Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington for his statement made following Conorquie's death that there is no evidence that suggests that the special constable was killed by Guatemalans.

PM Says Family Of Deceased SPC Will Be Taken Care Of
And while Conorquie was laid to rest and honored with a police funeral including the 21 gun salute, Belizeans are now questioning whether his family will receive monetary compensation from Government. The question arises since in the past GOB has compensated the family of a Guatemalan National who was shot and killed in Belizean territory. On March twenty-ninth, twenty-six year old Tomas Desdicho Ramirez, a resident of San Marcos in the municipality of Dolores, Guatemala was fatally hit in the chest, the abdomen and right leg. Ramirez was killed after a joint B.D.F. and Police Patrol came under fire by a group of men. But while many believe that Conorquie's family should be compensated since he died while in the line of duty, Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington has stated that there is no basis for compensation. Elrington has stated on the record that and we quote "Before any compensation can be sought it is necessary to ascertain who committed the offense. At this point in time we don't know who committed the offense.

Armed Robber Nabbed By Ladyville Police
Love News has confirmed that there was an armed robbery that occurred early this afternoon in the Lord's Bank area of Ladyville Village, Belize District. Ladyville Police was alerted of the crime in progress near the Brothers' Store and as a result of quick response, the officers were able to intercept the robbery and pursue the gunmen. The chase of the robbers was brief as just minutes later one of them was found hiding in some bushes and armed with a nine millimetre pistol. As a result, 31-year-old, Stephen Barrow, who has provided his address as being Roaring Creek Village, Cayo District was taken into the Ladyville Police Station and will be charged with kept unlicensed firearm and ammunition with a charge of aggravated robbery pending. The story is that Barrow had allegedly held up the workers in a Western Dairies delivery truck but since the men had no cash sales on them, their cellular phones and personal pocket money was taken from them. Police remain on the lookout for the other robber.

Belize/Guatemala: Where Do We Go From Here?
For over five decades now the issue between Belize and Guatemala has been discussed and taught in schools, on the streets, behind closed doors and even overseas .. IMG-20140930-WA0006but despite the meetings, the discussions and the expressed urgency by both sides of the political divide and Belizeans, on a whole, to have the matter settled, 2014 is almost over and there is no sign of closure on the matter in the near future. Tonight, we look at various incidents that have occurred between both countries over the years and the emotional rollercoaster that the myriad discussions have jerked in the Belizean people..but first let us look at the root of this territorial dispute. According to history lessons and books, the unresolved matter stems from way back in 1821 when Guatemala declared its independence from Spain. At the time the United Kingdom still had not embraced our country as a crown colonythat is not until 1862 ..

Party Leader Says PUP Is United
There has been a number of divisions within the Party and today we asked the party leader how far he is in terms of uniting the party. FRANCIS FONSECA "I spoke about the issue of unity; all the deputy leaders of the party and all the other speakers spoke about the importance of that issue and I think absolutely that we achieve that, that was one of the objectives going into the national party meeting and I think we absolutely achieved that. We came out of that meeting I think united, strong with a clear sense of purpose, a clear sense of direction and understanding that we have to work together and that the Belizean people are depending on us to rescue them from what is taking place today."

Supreme Court Grants Bahamians 100K Bail
34-year-old, Kelvin Leach and 29-year-old, Rohn Knowles were brought down to Belize City this morning for a bail application hearing before Justice Hanomansingh. After almost three hours of submissions by the attorneys and the Solicitor General, the two men were granted bail. It was an interesting argument presented in court, which we will tell you about later on in our newscast. For now, we will continue our story of the men and their bail applications which were approved by the Supreme Court judge. Just after the hearing, the media got an interview with Knowles' attorney, Godfrey Smith. GODFREY SMITH "Effectively or rather in summary the judge granted bail to the petitioners. They are to report to the police station twice a week and the usual bail conditions and the reason he did so was that he came to the conclusion based on our arguments that the process was defective, that the government misunderstood their powers under the extradition act. They just grabbed the men and sent them off to Kolbe without giving them an opportunity to challenge the basis of the provisional warrant for arrest, to make arguments for bail or any such thing; so, he was obliged to grant bail. It's a matter for the discretion of the judge. Yes it's a steep figure but that apart, I suppose the judge had some advertence to the fact that it is an extradition related matter and so on."

New tourist video of murder at Caracol surfaces on the internet
The murder of Danny Conorquie, a Special constable attached to the Tourism Police, who was shot to the head while he was stationed at the Caracol Mayan Site, has caused national outcry. The Hispanic men who made their way on the National Archaelogical site, are believed to be Guatemalan men who retaliated because their horses were confiscated while they were found poaching in Belize's Forests. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, however, has stated that there is absolutely no proof that the killers were in fact Guatemalans and therefore there is no basis to approach Guatemala about this murder.
