It is opening Day of the 2016 Canadian Olympic Regattas, Kingston (CORK) International Optimist Championship Regatta. Two of the four Belizean sailors here at Portsmouth Olympic Harbor are entered. They are Kevin Velasquez, 14, and Caroline Sersland, 12. Both are trained and were brought to this regatta by San Pedro's Belize Sailing School. Kevin won Belize's 2015 Optimist National Championship Regatta, and Caroline placed 3rd.
Today on freshwater Lake Ontario they braved 26 to 31 Mph winds and 4 foot chop to race against an international field. 29 sailors in the contingent of 65 Kevin was part of either withdrew due to sailing conditions or could not finish. Kevin dashed to the 11th spot among the remaining 36 left for him to compete with. Caroline was in the other half of the fleet. 17 in her fleet could not complete the race. Caroline beat out 29 of those who did complete the race to finish 18th in her fleet.
Any finish in the top 20 in regattas of this caliber demonstrtes extremely high ability and achievement.
We will update this report with Kevin's and Caroline's daily progress.
