PSU still has no official position on supporting BNTU strike
After a round of membership consultations, the Public Service Union (PSU) has still not taken an official position on whether or not it will support the Belize National Teacher's Union (BNTU) in its strike action against the Government of Belize. PSU President, Eldred Neal, just concluded a countrywide tour of consultations with the PSU's membership and some of the sentiments of the branches did not favor strike action; however, the PSU hasn't come forward to say that it won't strike. "We stand against corruption and for many of the things that the teachers are fighting for in principle, but the feeling thus far from the membership is that the situation doesn't call for strike action at this time," Neal said, speaking on the results on the meetings with the Orange Walk, Cayo and Belize City branches.

Death toll in Haiti following Hurricane Matthew nears 900; expected to exceed 1,000
The death toll after Hurricane Matthew pummelled island nation, Haiti, stands at almost 900. Aid is finally beginning to arrive for the affected areas, days after the hurricane cut off communication in some of the hardest-hit towns. Aid officials have reported that almost 90 percent of some areas of Haiti's south had been completely destroyed. Focus is also now being placed on the department of Grand-Anse on the northern tip of Haiti, where the death toll and damage is believed to be highest. If this proves to be true, the death toll is expected to exceed the 1,000 mark since the figures officials have provided so far do not include Grand-Anse or other nearby areas.

You Know You Live on Ambergris Caye, Belize When
Moving to Belize over nine years ago was an amazing thing. I've had the chance to immerse myself in a new culture, new music, new languages (Spanish, Kriol, Maya, Garifuna - depending on which part of the country you are in) and piles and piles of delicious Belizean food. To learn how to shop different, walk or hitchhike everywhere and drive a golf cart, fly or take a boat when I want to travel to the city and so many more things. Life slows down and changes when you adapt to life in Belize. That adaption is not without its tribulations. (15 Things No One Told You About Moving to Belize.) But you know that you have arrived, I think, when start doing the following:

How I became a Millionaire on World Smile Day
I love October for countless reasons, but one just jumped to the top of the list. Every year on World Smile Day we are called to "Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile". Did you know that this movement was initiated by the creator of the smiley face, Harvey Ball? It brings a sense of comfort to know you did something nice for someone. Still, in my home our values call on us to do this on a daily basis. I don't go to bed happy at night if I didn't make at least one person smile throughout the day. So what makes World Smile Day any different, right? This year I decided to change things up a bit. I needed to make as many people smile as possible! In this heat I could only think of paletas! You may know them as popsicles. In our town the local ice-cream shoppe has been making them in different flavors, with real fruit, with or without milk, since as far back as I can remember. It's like ice-cream on a stick and sure to make children of all ages smile.

Putting a pricetag on conservation
As habitat loss, climate change and human intervention continue to threaten our species, conservation takes on an increasingly important role. But that comes at a price. Just how high is it? The Chiquibul Jungle in Belize is regarded as a national treasure, but biodiversity in the vast wooded area bordering Guatemala is a complex thing. Conservation projects, including for imposing species such as the scarlet macaw or the jaguar - as well as the deployment of armed rangers to protect against poaching -are expensive. So exactly how much does Belize have to pay for wildlife protection, and where does the money come from? A film by Katja Dhne. Project goal: Biofin wants to find out how much it costs to protect biodiversity in Belize. Efforts are also underway to find possible alternative financing. Project implementation: Hannah St. Luce Martinez is country coordinator for Biofin in Belize and has been charged with establishing how much financing is needed where to protect biodiversity. Project size: The whole of Belize. The Chiquibul Jungle, with its 1,700 square kilometers of forest, is one of the main areas of implementation. Biodiversity: The Chiquibul Jungle is considered one of the most biodiverse areas in Belize.
