Perspective People! I Choose To Make San Pedro My Home
The island is all abuzz about a murder that took place late yesterday afternoon in downtown San Pedro; a shooting purportedly connected to another murder that occurred just a few days before, and likely not very coincidently taking place on the day of the funeral of the first murder victim.
I have read through hundreds of comments posted on the local news articles about these murders, and a good majority of the comments were made by tourist types who state in a variety of ways that because of these crimes (and others that have made the news) they will likely never visit (or return visit) to San Pedro, and some who are second- guessing in commentary whether or not San Pedro is any longer a fit and safe place to which they might consider moving. Of course this town thrives on its tourism industry. News of crimes can and does have a detrimental effect on the psyche of potential visitors.

ACES traveled to Caye Caulker to save a couple of crocs this weekend. It's a sad state of affairs when a wild animal needs rescuing from it's natural habitat, but after numerous reports of dead crocs in this area and poachers continuing to set baited hooks to catch and kill we had to take action.
If anyone sees anything like this going on and a crocs life, or any wildlife for that matter is in danger, please don't hesitate to contact ACES on 623 7920. We're always here to help

Fourth City Murder In A Week
Belize City has been relatively quiet since April, after former Southside Commander ACP Chester Williams facilitated a citywide gang truce, but this month has seen a sharp spike in murders.
In August alone, seven people have been murdered in the city, four of them killed just this week!
The latest in the string of violence occurred at around 4:30 this afternoon when a gunman shot up the area surrounding the Conch Shell Bay Fish Market. In an attempt to escape the gun fire, reports say Windell Gibson and Keron Santos ran over to Lindo's Alley, but were followed by the assailant, who fired at least eight more shots at the pair. Both men were shot and Gibson succumbed to his injuries not long after. Santos is currently in critical condition. It is still unknown if Gibson and Santos were the intended targets since the fish market is a heavily trafficked area, and it was crowded at the time of the incident.
Doehm Couple Back To Court
A month ago, we told you about the high profile case out of San Pedro involving the American couple, David and Anke Doehm. They were charged with cruelty to a child for the death of their 13 year-old adopted daughter, Faye Lin Cannon, after a week of being investigated but not charged with murder. Well, they've been out on bail, living in Belize City, staying under the radar while they await today's adjournment of their case in the Magistrate's Court.
The DPP's Office committed to provide partial disclosure to them so that they can see the evidence that the police has amassed against them for the questionable death of their daughter. Crown Counsel Jacqueline Willoughby showed up, and did just that. She handed over a sheaf of police witnesses statements that she intends to use to convict them of the negligence which directly led to Faye's death.
Police ID Body Found, Family Grapples With Loss
The body that was found yesterday afternoon has been identified as 25 year old Linton Broaster-Wilshire. His family had to bury him last night- no coffin, no funeral service because his body was starting to decompose. They didn't have any other choice. And it's that tragic and devastating end that his family now has to come to terms with. Today Courtney Weatherburne met with the family who is now left wondering...why.
Veree Hyde, Cousin:
"Linton was here, he came Monday afternoon because he wanted me to plat his hair and then I was cooking so he asked Cristina, the next cousin to plat his hair and she went out for her mom and he dropped asleep right here in my chair. He get up off the chair like an hour after, he went to hail his aunt, came back, drank water and he just walk and went."
18 Year Old Crevan Cardinez Was Dumped Overboard and Left For Dead
Yesterday we told you about a report that a man was thrown out of a boat by Rock Park on Princess Margaret Drive. Two Fisheries officers saw it and deployed their own vessels while also calling the police and Coast Guard who deployed divers and boats, but found nothing.
But the report was accurate, and the body was found this morning, in the sea near the municipal airstrip. It is 18 year old Crevan Cardinez - a young man from the gang neighborhood of Taylor's Alley who was just in court two weeks ago, accused of shooting at someone here in the city. He was also found with a gun. And now, just 6 days after getting released on bail, he's dead. Today, police told us what they know so far:
Jevaun Recaptured and Arraigned
Last night, we told you about 24 year-old Jevaun Belizaire. He was the man who escaped for police custody after he was charged for the murder of 24 year-old Ryan "Fish" Thompson. Well, he has been recaptured, and tonight he's behind bars at the Belize Central Prison.
Police say that they caught him in Belize City at around 5:30 a.m., and he was charged with escaping from lawful custody. He was arraigned today before Acting Chief Magistrate on the offenses of murder and and escape. Due to the nature of the offense, he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until October 24.
Two Supposed Hitmen Charged For Drug Related Murder On San Pedro
And police cracked another recent murder, this one on San Pedro. We told you last week how 25 year-old Scott Charles was killed inside his Bay Side home one week ago. Well police have arrested and charged Jose Armando Marroquin and Sarbelo Marroquin for the crime of murder. They will be arraigned in Magistrate's Court at the earliest convenience, and they will then be remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
Police sources tell us these men are believed to be hitmen for one of the warring groups on San Pedro that has been trying to protect their drug turf. They were identified by witnesses in an identification parade.
No Goodwill From GOB, Chinese Performing Troupe Has To Pay 70K For Visas
The China Disabled Persons Performing Arts Troupe is set to arrive in Belize on Saturday for a performance on Sunday night. Featuring persons who are blind, deaf, and mute, the Troupe is well recognized internationally for their awe-inspiring performances.
But, tonight the Belize-Chinese community isn't happy with the Government of Belize - because they have to come up with sixty-six thousand dollars to pay for the visas for the 33 members of the troupe.
Now, the troupe will only be here from Saturday to Tuesday - and the precedent with other Asian performers is that they usually get the fee waived - since it is a goodwill cultural visit.
But, these mainland Chinese performers aren't getting any waiver - because, reportedly, because the minister has no power to waive fees.
PUP Make Scathing Statement On Land Scandals
For the past 2 nights, we've been showing you the latest set of leaked documents out of the Lands Department. It shows how family members of Former Lands Minister Gaspar Vega ended up getting compensated with island properties on Mosquito Caye. That's after the Lands Department sold duplicate land titles to parcels of land on Caye Caulker that were already privately owned. The owners of those pre-owned titles then sold it to the Vega's in a private transaction - which, the Ministry of Natural Resources compensated them for.
It follows a similar pattern that has been revealed several times over the past few months with land acquisition by the Vegas and today, the PUP released a statement basically saying, enough is enough.
Stole The Safe, But Didn't Get Much
Thieves broke into Westrac Orange Walk on the Phillip Goldson highway last night - but they didn't get much - even though they stole the entire safe!
According to police, 30 year old Jacob Friesen reported that when he got to work this morning at around 7:30 he saw that a glass window located on the front side of the building was broken. Friesen looked inside the store and found that his metal safe containing only four hundred dollars in cash along with other documents had been stolen.
Police Get Big Handgun In City
Last night at 8:20 PM the GSU searched a white Mariner SUV in front of the Yabra basketball court. Karon Wright was driving accompanied by Monica Murillo. 'Round George Street
Last night in Belize City, police searched an abandoned lot on George Street. They found two pounds of weed and ten 9 millimeter rounds. No one was present at the time of any of these searches so the items were marked as found property.

Dion and PIV Team Up For Park
The convention for the UDP mayoral candidate is coming up on Sunday. And, right now, both candidates are wrapping up their final campaign efforts. Today we caught up with mayoral hopeful Dion Leslie painting a park with members of the PIV gang:
Dion Leslie, Mayoral Hopeful:
"This is a combination of about 2 weeks of work where we chose the Flamboyant street Oleander street, Jasmine street, and all the areas in between that people may know as PIV um but we chose this area in Lake independence in parts of pick stock to do a comprehensive clean up in terms of cleaning of drains picking up of garage and a basic upliftment of the area in general. All the residents got involved."
Leslie Ready For Sunday Convention
In the run-up to the convention, Leslie has been working on several projects to keep himself visible in the community. But for his opponent Phillip Willoughby, visibility is business as usual. Seems like he's on the news just about every other day - and even though he is the underdog in Sunday's convention with less money and less support from his political colleagues, Willoughby's high public profile has made him a kind of dark horse. But Leslie is still the favorite to win, and the choice of his party. We asked him about the road ahead.
