October 1st: Conch and Construction North
Today is October 1st. Shocking to be sure. To feel year end approaching. But here in Belize it heralds the opening of CONCH SEASON. The Queen Conch - a large snail in her beautiful beautiful shell - is delicious. My favorite seafood in Belize. But she is also increasingly rare and endangered. I wrote a post about my favorite spots to eat it a few years ago(not knowing at the time that the chef that made the sushi would later be my boyfriend) but my new favorite is at Aba Isieni Restaurant. Just a small wooden deli that does some REALLY food in the Boca del Rio area. Ohand the conch pizza at Truck Stop. I NEED TO WAIT UNTIL THEY RE-OPEN on October 17th.

Glover's Reef: Vacationing 'Off the Grid' in Belize
Indeed, self-sufficiency, an adventurous spirit, and a great deal of patience are mandatory tools to equip yourself with for an island experience in Belize. And Glover's Reef, a partially submerged atoll approximately 45 kilometers from the country's southern coast, tests your mettle but does so only playfully, the ideal marriage of island relaxation and adrenaline-pumping thrills. Low-key resorts abound throughout the Reef, ours featuring humble thatch-covered bungalows, hanging over ankle-deep, sun-kissed water, stand like alert sentries, each patrolling a swatch of sandy shore. Luxury doesn't live here, but these modest, electricity-free accommodations - little more than a simple bed, table with chairs, hot plate and hammock (swaying gently on the back porch, naturally) - exist subtly, suitably perfect for an unplugged escape. You'll be expected to work here, lending muscle to load and subsequently unload the mid-sized, chartered boat transporting you and your island mates the handful of hours from the mainland, but the investment is small when compared to the pairing of adventure and tranquility awaiting you.

Trip Report - What a vacation in Belize looks like when you split time between San Pedro and Placencia!
Since we have opened our second hotel in Belize, in San Pedro, we have had a lot of questions about what a vacation might look or feel like to do both San Pedro AND Placencia in one trip! We have had a number of guests book the package deal and thus far we are getting rave reviews, because Placencia and San Pedro are VERY different - they are like different countries. Recently, we had a group of two single women come down and do both (they started at PUR Boutique Cabanas in San Pedro, then went down to Caribbean Beach Cabanas in Placencia), and they offered to write a guest blog about their adventures here!

Philip Goldson
The practice of naming airports after famous people has been in existence for many years. Presidents, artists, explorers, musicians, philanthropists and even footballers grace the names of some of the worlds most travelled airports. Here in Belize, it is our National Hero, Philip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson, who lends his name to the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA). Philip Goldson was born on July 25th 1923 in Belize City at a time when Belize was still under British rule and known as British Honduras. At the age of 18 he took a job in the Civil Service, which sparked his lifelong interest in journalism and politics. He quickly became involved in the Nationalist movement, a movement focusing on the country's independence from Britain, which took off with the formation of the Peoples United Party (PUP) in 1950.

ADO Bus from Cancun to Belize City
Belize is located just south of Mexico's famed Yucatan Peninsula, so many travelers are interested in information on how to get from Cancn to Belize City or vice versa. The cheapest option by far is to take the bus. The ADO Bus company operates the sole Cancn-Belize City route with an express service that operates each way twice per day. From the main bus terminal in Cancn, the bus leaves at either 7:30 AM or 10:15 PM. The busstops at Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and then Bacalar before crossing the border into Belize. The bus also makes brief stops in Corozal Town and Orange Walk Town before arriving at the central bus terminal in Belize City. Transit time is approximately eight hours. Going back, the bus departs Belize City at 11:00 AM and 7:30 PM with the same stops along the way, arriving at the Cancn airport approximately eight and a half hours later. To board the bus in Belize City, the fare is BZ$19, but you will need to pay the rest of the fare (roughly $40 USD) upon arrival in Cancn. The price for the ADO bus is subject to change, but expect to pay around 840 Mexican pesos (roughly $45 USD) for departures from Cancn and slightly lower fares for service from one of the other stops along the way.

Belize Mayan Temple Vacations: Face-to-face With a Lost Civilization
Tucked just underneath Mexico's legendary Yucatan Peninsula, the small nation of Belize is home to more ancient Maya temples, palaces, pyramids, and sacred caves than anywhere else in Central America. These magnificent historical structures are the principal reason that many visitors book Belize vacations. Whether it's a day trip from Belize City to tour iconic sites like Altun Ha or trips deep in the jungle to explore the enormous ancient metropolises of Xunantunich or Caracol, there are Maya sites sure to attract any traveler. Families especially love incorporating a trip to ancient Maya sites into their Belize travel plans because it offers a chance for children of all ages to get some hands-on experience with one of the most advanced cultures to arise in the New World, one key reason why most Belize resorts offer guided tours to ancient Maya sites for their guests.

Ranging from tiny, iridescent hummingbirds to the elegant majesty of giant Jabiru storks, more than 600 species of birds have been recorded in Belize. Birds thrive in Belize's warm, subtropical climate, and the pristine nature of the different habitats in the country, including grasslands, savannas, rainforests, coastal regions, and wetlands, make Belize an ideal place for birds to thrive. But when it comes to spotting birds in Belize, the process can sometimes be quite frustrating. The jungles and rainforest have thick vegetation which makes it hard to see birds. And many birds live high up in the jungle canopy, forcing human observers to strain their neck looking upwards. And because nature is so wild in Belize, the presence of predators makes many birds zip about in quick, furtive movements that offer tantalizing glimpses of their presences.

The Great Blue Hole of Belize
Sometimes known as the "Blue Hole of Belize," the Great Blue Hole of Belize is a natural phenomenon located approximately 60 miles (100 km) offshore of Belize City. Formed by a cave system that collapsed hundreds of thousands of years ago, the Great Blue Hole of Belize is almost perfectly circular, measuring 980 feet (300 meters) across and some 400 feet (125 meters) deep. Named for its startlingly deep blue waters, the Great Blue Hole is surrounded by the Lighthouse Reef, a small coral atoll that is a popular snorkeling destination.

Fun Facts for Kids about the Amazing Belize Rainforest
One of the most mysterious and least explored places on Planet Earth, the vast rainforest in Belize is home to an astounding variety of beautiful flowers, colorful birds, and exotic wildlife. Here are some fun facts about Belize's rainforest: It's Huge! More than half of mainland Belize is covered in rainforest. A rainforest is like a regular forest except that it gets lots and lots of rain (as you'd expect), meaning that plants and animals really love it. There are hundreds of different kinds of trees in the rainforest but also fragile, beautiful flowers like orchids. Did you know that the Black Orchid is the national flower of Belize?

Western Caribbean Tropical Development Is Possible Late This Week & This Weekend
Satellite imagery indicated that there are some scattered shower and thunderstorm activity occurring across the southwestern Caribbean to the south of Jamaica. This is being caused by a trough of low pressure located over the central Caribbean that is pushing to the west. The western half of the Caribbean will need to be watched very closely for possible tropical development later this week and this weekend. Even though we already have convection occurring across the southwestern Caribbean, the environmental conditions across much of the Caribbean is unfavorable for development. Wind shear values across much of the Caribbean are between 25 and 40 knots. The exception is across the far northwestern Caribbean where wind shear values are between 10 and 20 knots. So, tropical development seems unlikely for at least the next couple of days.

Belize continues to lament Guatemala's territorial claim
Thirty-seven years after obtaining its independence from Britain, Belize is still lamenting Guatemala's territorial claim to parts of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member-country. "The opportunity to have the Guatemalan claim resolved at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) eluded the British government for upward of 80 years," Belize's Foreign Affairs Minister Wilfred P. Elrington told the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly Debate on Saturday. He said Belizeans themselves will soon decide whether the opportunity to bring to a definitive settlement a claim, "which has long sown fear in the hearts of all Belizeans and which has hamstrung our nation's development potential, will in fact be seized."
