The site of Marco Gonzales, 8km south of San Pedro Town, was once a very important trading post for the Maya of the region. The site was occupied for about 2100 years but was abandoned most likely to the rising sea level and mangrove encroachment of the area.

That's why the National Emergency Management Organization offices countrywide are on alert in the case of flash floods:

From One Plan to Many
My Canadian friend Heather is here for 11 days (technically 12 but since she is on a 10 am Tropic flight later this week, we are counting 11). She arrived last Saturday and other than working on San Mateo area stuff, a few walks and lots of couch time we had absolutely no plans. The universe stepped in and decided that we were shorting ourselves on social activities and presented us with a few options that we absolutely could not refuse. Over the course of the last 9 days, we found ourselves enjoying 2.5 days and one night with our friends at Playa De Sala. A luxurious South Ambergris Caye 5 room boutique hotel with one of the best bars on the island. We also scored a ride on a 24h Xsite glamping trip that took us to Goff's Caye (featured image above) for 24 h.

Bird Watching with Black Rock Lodge
For our second episode of A Day in a Birder's Life series, we got to go birding with Black Rock Lodge. Black Rock Lodge is an eco-lodge located about six miles away from San Ignacio Town. According to eBird, Black Rock Lodge is listed as the #1 birding hotspot in Belize with around 318 bird species. Nestled within a lush tropical forest, accompanied by the majestic Macal River, Black Rock Lodge also offers great amenities for both local and international travelers. Not only do visitors get to go birding, but you can also take advantage of the lodge's other on-site activities such as hiking and river tubing. So if you need a break from the busy life of modern civilization, then this place is perfect for you. On our way to the lodge, we got the opportunity to witness beautiful sceneries one after the other. We were so impressed by Mother Nature's work that we even stopped half-way through our journey to admire the waterfalls in the distant cliffs off the traffic barriers at the edge of the road.

Belize's Great Blue Hole Is Mysterious and Thrilling
When Jacques Cousteau arrived at the Great Blue Hole in Belize in 1971, he declared it to be one of the top five most interesting dive sites in the world. The Great Blue Hole is a circle of dark blue water located inside Lighthouse Reef just a few miles offshore from mainland Belize. Underneath the water lies a huge cave formation complete with stalactites, stalagmites, and tunnels. Unlike most dive sites in Belize where the main attraction is the colorful fish and delicate coral, the Great Blue Hole is sparsely inhabited by just a few marauding sharks. The attraction of the diving the Great Blue Hole is the chance to explore a mysterious and gothic underworld. The Great Blue Hole was originally a limestone cave that formed on dry land millions of years ago. But when the glaciers began to melt some 150,000 years ago, the cave became submerged.

Flock to Belize for the First Annual Birding Festival
On October 27, 2018, Belize will hold its very first Birding Festival. Birdwatching clubs, birding enthusiasts, nature societies, and others interested in learning more about the incredible diversity and beauty of avian species in Belize are warmly encouraged to attend this year's Birding Festival in Belmopan. The Birding Festival is jointly organized by the Belize Tourism Industry Association, Belize Audobon Society, Belize Hotel Association, and Belize Tourism Board in an effort to raise awareness for the nearly 600 feathered species that are found in Belize. The Birding Festival will start with a three-hour birdwatch expedition in the streets of Belmopan followed by a keynote address from Dr. Oliver Komar, the author of the Peterson Field Guide to Birds of Northern Central America.

Move Over Sundance, There's a New Film Fest Kid in Town
The 2018 Annual Belize International Film Festival will be rolling from November 8 - 11 this year, showcasing an eclectic assortment of films, highlighting a vibrant arts scene, and proving once again that Belize is more than just a pretty face. What? You don't associate Belize with films? Well, what was Aspen associated with before Sundance? Or Venice, Berlin and Toronto before their film festivals? Skiing, a bunch of canals, a wall that came down and well, whatever that fine Canadian city was known for before hosting one of the world's premier film festivals. But they all do have certain things in common for holding great film festivals - natural beauty, rich cultures, vibrant local art scenes, and creative people determined to put together a film festival.

Nursing students make impact in Belize
A dozen recently returned from a life-changing experience in Belize. Led by Whitson-Hester School of Nursing professor Melissa Geist, the seniors got a first-hand look at healthcare in a third-world country during a week-long visit in August. "It is life-changing," Geist said. "It impacts the way they approach nursing." The group stayed in Agucate, a village consisting of approximately 400 people. There, they worked with the certified community health worker to do wellness checks and restock the village's health outpost. "We brought a lot of donated items," Geist said.

Under the skin: The fascinating lives of botflies
Old Blue Eyes may not have been thinking of botflies when he crooned, "And each time I do just the thought of you/Makes me stop before I begin/'Cause I've got you under my skin," but the sentiment could just as easily apply to Western travelers returning from countries such as Belize and Bolivia with uninvited guests squirming happily under their epidermis. Many may wish they had eschewed the fantastical sights of the rainforests of South America and boarded a plane to a less exotic destination when what seemed like a simple mosquito bite begins showing signs of life. Indeed, reports of travelers who have picked up botflies abound in news reports from around the world. Botfly infections, a form of myiasis, or fly parasitization, typically first present as an irritated lump like a bug bite, and indeed, most botflies picked up by humans are in fact deposited on their skin by mosquitoes and other blood-suckers. In a behavior known as phoresy, female botflies dragoon mosquitoes into their bizarre reproductive cycle, gluing eggs to them and setting them free to seek a host.
