Our rainfall is very erratic over the years, actually hard to define. Some years we have not had a proper dry season, other years not a proper wet season, some years both, some years neither. Yet despite those variations, at the end of each year, our total annual rain fall figures are surprisingly similar. The typical or average of many years for Belmopan is 2060mm last year 2018 was actually 2145mm. Last year, both Jan and Feb were over twice the normal, this year Jan and Feb have been about half the normal, a huge difference. Cold fronts coming down from the north make a big difference to our weather, temperatures and rain. The way above rainfall in 2018 Jan, Feb and Oct offset the low months.
But now low rain fall in Dec and now Jan and Feb is putting us in a problem. The normal dry season only runs from March, April and most of May, about 2½ months, and now the prospect of 5½ months is not good.
Belize has more than enough rainfall, but not at the right times and right places always. Belize needs to build suitable reservoirs and some large distribution pipes, that would resolve our annual problem, but at what cost?
For every 1% of organic matter in topsoil, it is able to hold 16,500 gals of water per acre (1 ft depth). Belize's typical conventional farm here has 1.5% or less. The highest I have seen in Belize is 5% O.M. Increasing that organic matter, leads the way mitigating both droughts and floods.
Last year Temperatures were below normal in Jan and Feb, particularly the day highs, that was due to the above average rainfall and clouds. But this year, with very few rains and clouds, the Jan and Feb temperatures are higher.
But most of the year was very close to the long term averages, as shown by the dotted red and dotted blue lines,if you can see them. The thin red and blue are the actual daily temperatures and the heavy Red and Blue are the 31 day running averages. ( Which is why the last 15 days in Feb can't show the smoothed average yet. ) The Green line actually means nothing, it is not even any average, it is just a smoothed mean between the daily highs and lows, gives a general temperature indication.
