Clean up mission this morning along the Consejo Road
While most of us took a day off and headed to our emerald green bay to celebrate our Labour Day Holiday, a couple of residents who have made Corozal their adopted home were on a clean up mission this morning along the Consejo Road, in an area, that is just a few hundred feet from the Corozal dumpsite. A total of two pick up truck loads were removed and taken to the dump site. Sue Paoletti was the organizer and plans to have a few more of these clean ups before the month's end. Thanks to everyone who came out to help under this scorching hot sun. This media blog is asking the general public to please use the dumpsite allocated for this purpose and not to create clandestine dumpsites.

TOO MUCH SUN
The Caribbean region promotes itself to the world as the paradise of sun, sand and turquoise blue seas but extreme drought conditions in the past eight months or so have pushed people in the region to ironically complain about too much sun. Even before 2018 hurricane season had petered out around October, regional weather experts had pointed to the presence of an El Nino dry season that has led to drought conditions in countries from Suriname and Guyana on South America's northern coast to as far as Belize in Central America. Belize is a member of the CARICOM bloc of nations. The drought has caused severe water shortages in many countries, forcing authorities to provide potable water by trucks and tankers to bring relief. Bush and grass fires have broken out daily with fire services officials in Suriname and Guyana especially complaining of attending to up to 30 incidents daily.

Quintana Roo's sargassum nightmare is back but without funds for it
A huge tide of sargassum has once again invaded shores of the Caribbean, including some of Mexico's most popular beaches. But despite the magnitude of the problem, the federal government has not allocated the funding that has been requested to deal with it. According to the Cancn sargassum monitoring network, 30 countries, territories and protectorates are forecast to receive massive amounts of sargassum, including Mexico, the United States, Cuba, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Belize, Colombia, Panama, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and the Bahamas among others. So far in Mexico, the beaches of the Riviera Maya in Quintana Roo have been the hardest hit, including Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, Puerto Morelos the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Othn P. Blanco and Bacalar.

15,000 Wild Jaguars Left, Humans Must Work Together Across Borders to Protect
In early April the mutilated body of a jaguar was discovered in Mexico's Yaxchiln Natural Monument. Researchers investigating the death quickly concluded that the animal, which had been tracked in neighboring Guatemala since 2015, had crossed the border and fallen prey to wildlife traffickers, who may have taken its head for sale on the black market. Deaths like this, when a jaguar crosses the border from a protected area into a different country, may have something to do with the big cats' plummeting populations, experts worry. Today the wide-ranging jaguar (Panthera onca), which once lived throughout South America and north into the U.S., is considered a threatened species. Conservation groups estimate there are only 15,000 wild jaguars left, mostly due to poaching and deforestation.

FTC shuts down largest real estate scam ever
The word "sanctuary" brings to mind comforting places - an oasis, a nature preserve, a port in a storm. That's probably why it was chosen as part of the name of a luxury real estate development that turned out to be anything but any of those places. In November, a federal district court granted the FTC's request to shut down a massive real estate investment scam called Sanctuary Belize that took in over $100 million. Located in the Central American country of Belize, it was also marketed under other names, including Sanctuary Bay and The Reserve. The umbrella organization was Sanctuary Belize Enterprise or SBE and it was the largest real estate scam the FTC has ever busted. Promoters advertised through commercials and infomercials on Fox News and Bloomberg news, as well as through seminars.

Detecting Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease
A coral disease that was first documented in Florida is now being reported in some parts of the Caribbean. A new guide from MPAConnect seeks to help Caribbean marine natural resource managers who are responsible for priority coral reef marine protected areas to be on the alert for this disease and to detect whether it is occurring on their coral reefs. Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease spreads rapidly and affects some of the slowest-growing and longest-lived reef-building corals, including the iconic brain corals, star corals and pillar corals. Scientists are uncertain about the cause of the disease, but it appears to be water-borne and can be spread by contact.
