New Fire Chief says National Fire Service must be Adequately Equipped and Proactive
Belize's New Fire Chief, Colin Gillett, having completed a tour of most of the National Fire Service's facilities countrywide, says he is determined to have the service adequately equipped and proactive in executing its essential function of keeping Belize safe from fires and explosive hazards. Gillett, who is being accompanied on his working tour by CEO Ruth Meighan and other personnel from the Ministry of Transport and National Emergency Management, says that under his command the National Fire Service will place high priority on prevention, through public education and highly trained personnel. Colin Gillett is 42 years old and holds a Master's Degree in Natural Resource Management from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados. Most recently, he served as Deputy National Coordinator for the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO).

Students turn plastic litter into art
A public anti-litter education campaign to recycle plastic and glass containers is an integral part of the Marine Litter Action Plan presented by the Department of the Environment at the Radisson Fort George Hotel in Belize City on Wednesday, September 4. Styrofoam food containers are already being phased out, and a ban on non-biodegradable plastic bags, single-use bottles, and food containers was passed into law on Earth Day, April 22 this year. The ban is expected to take full effect by the end of this year, and the Commonwealth Litter Programme (CLiP) is helping the DOE to address the problem of marine plastic litter.

New law will regulate Mexican and Guatemalan buses entering Belize
The Belize Bus Association (BBA) has been up in arms trying to protect their routes within the country from foreign competition, allegedly Mexican and Guatemalan bus companies are transporting local passengers within Belize. This new measure came into effect on Wednesday, August 4th, when it was signed by the Minister of Transport, Honourable Edmond Castro. The SI aims to regulate the runs of foreign buses as well as those runs operated locally by the outside companies.

Diabetes self care project (Information & Health Fair)
Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 9 AM - 2 PM, Belize Diabetes Association, 27 7th Avenue, Corozal. This project is a joint effort between the Belize Diabetes Association (BDA) and the Ministry of Health funded through the International Diabetes Federation(IDF). The Diabetes Self-Care Management Project aims to to encourage Type 2 Diabetics through the help of Community Health Workers, Diabetes Supporters and Medical personnel, to practice a healthy lifestyle, and develop self-care management skills in order to prevent chronic complications so often seen in diabetics.
