Garifuna Settlement Day 2019 - Belize City
Lots of great photos by the BTB.

Remembering Dr. Joseph Palacio
In celebration of Garifuna Settlement Day, we remember a giant in the Archaeology and Garifuna community in Belize. As a pioneer, he became the first archaeologist in Belize and the first Garifuna to be trained in Archaeology and Anthropology. Following upon his studies, he was appointed by the Government as the first Archaeological Commissioner of Belize. In this position, he was given the responsibility of establishing Belize's initial Archaeological Department in a context where Belize , then known as British Honduras, was creating new institutions to define itself as a nation. For many years, he was the only trained archaeologist in Belize. During his tenure as Archaeological Commissioner, Dr. Palacio was instrumental in the development of legislation relating to the excavation, preservation and development of Belize's rich archaeological heritage. Prior to his tenure, many valuable artifacts were stolen and sold illegally outside of the country.

Importante date for us Maya Masewal : Jacinto Canek
Jacinto Canek or Jacinto Uc de los Santos was a 18th-century Maya revolutionary who fought against the Spanish in the Yucatn Peninsula of New Spain. His sentence was carried out in the main plaza of Mrida on December 14, 1761. A good reading for us Yucatec Maya of Belize to learn more about our ancestors struggle . The Spanish conquest of Yucatn ended in the late 17th century, with the fall of the Itza people, the last group of Maya able to resist the conquistadors. However, the Mayas continued armed revolt against the Spanish into the 18th century, and after an interruption, into the early 20th century under Mexican jurisdiction.

Good Deeds Get Applause From The Reporter Newspaper
The work of some people is a reminder to all of us that the world still has a lot more-good-than-bad in the hearts and minds in our community and our global village. Sometime if you look closer we may realize that without the kind work of some people and organizations, our community would appear to be a little cold, mean, harsh place. But it's not !

Let's Taco 'Bout It!
Tacos are deceptively simple by reputation, however; the reality is there's so much that goes into making them. Whether your favorite is Al Pastor, Carnitas, Chorizo, Street Tacos, or Asada, the taco is a food everyone can agree on how astounding it is. It's simple Tacos make people happy. They have been around for a long time and are traditionally served as warm corn/maize tortillas stuffed with many different types of juicy, marinated meat and spices. As a country that has always been a melting pot of different cultures, Belize is as diverse as it gets, and it only gives the country an endless catalog of possibilities; not only in terms of culture but also food. Though the district is called "Shuga City," ask anyone where you can get really great tacos in Belize, and they will definitely tell you Orange Walk! No other district in the country can compare.

Three Perfect Days in Caye Caulker
Caye Caulker, a laid back island located  20 miles north-northeast of Belize City, is the perfect beach vacation option. Attracting visitors due to its proximity to the Belize Barrier Reef and access to incredible diving and snorkeling, it is one of the most popular destinations visited in Belize. Looking to visit the island? Here is how you can spend three perfect days on the island. The day you arrive, spend some time getting acquainted with the beautiful island. It's a small island, roughly five miles long. Either by foot or on bike you can explore the sandy streets of the island. To beat the heat, stop in at a beach bar to enjoy a fresh tropical cocktail. End your evening watching the sunset at the Southern tip of the island known as The Split or on a sunset cruise.

The Garifuna
It's November 19. In dories and boats, the Garinagu bring coconut, plantain, cassava, and the drums of their ancestors to Dangriga's shores, as the crowds-Belizeans and visitors alike-cheer and celebrate in the streets. This is Yurumein: the reenactment of the Garifuna journey to Belize. Garifuna Settlement Day is also a national holiday across Belize since 1943. It's a celebration of culture, resilience, and vision.
