Honduran Air Force Report On Heli Crash Points to Pilot Error, Disorientation
Tonight, the preliminary report on the BDF helicopter crash that cost the lives of four soldiers has been released. And, it shows pilot error was the likely cause of one of the worst air accidents Belize has ever seen. The report compiled by the Honduras Air Force Accident Prevention and Investigation Board says, quote, "the crew began a right turn with a defending vertical speed of one thousand feet per minute which possibly caused a spatial disorientation in the crew since they were performing a night flight under unfavourable atmospheric conditions, without night vision goggles equipment and also flying over water." End quote.

Timeline For A Tragedy
So, there it is: the pilot, Major Radford Baizer became disoriented - made a right turn and went right into the lagoon - which was only 5 feet deep. A terrible end - but there are still many more questions than answers. Today, Minister of National Security Mike Peyrefitte presented the local report with the timeline and the chain of command that led to the doomed mission:

Whatsapp Was Central To Mission
But they never returned to base, and that message was never received. They helicopter and crew would not be found until 30 hours later, in the bottom of the lagoon. No one even reported them missing until 12 hours after they went down. So, who failed to follow up? And why were they using WhatsApp on such a serious mission? The press grilled the Minister, and the Brig. Gen. this afternoon at the Coast Guard Headquarters about who failed to follow up and the WhatsApp factor - which the investigators found could have affected the pilot's orientation:

5K lbs of Cocaine
At the top of the news, we showed you the briefing that National Security Minister Michael Peyrefitte hosted to discuss the investigation into the helicopter crash which resulted in the death of the BDF soldiers, Adran Ramirez, Radford Baizar, Yassir Mendez, and Reinaldo Choco. They were part of the law enforcement team which went to intercept that narco-jet that was carrying approximately 100 million dollars' worth of cocaine. This afternoon, the police department concluded the mission those men gave their lives to be a part of by burning just over 5,072 pounds of cocaine. The police department invited the press to witness the burning of all those drugs, and 7News was there. Daniel Ortiz reports:

Grandmother Dies
"This morning at about 6:30am police received information of a female body that was sighted on a road in the Lake Garden area near the M& M construction site. The person was identified as that of Carolyn Joan Arnold of a Lake Garden address." Reporter: Sir, the nature of the injuries are you able to share a little bit more? It's a cut wound that she has to the upper body. 10:28

Family Speak
And this evening we heard from Arnold's son-in-law. He called her cruel and violent demise "ridiculous" and laments that the mother of 4 and grandmother of 15 who had spent many years working and providing for her family in the U.S. had her life cut off just as she was building herself a comfortable home. We spoke to him via telephone.

Devon Arnold Shot & Killed
24-year-old Devon Arnold, a resident of Arlington Drive lost his life on Friday night in yet another shooting on Belize City's Central American Boulevard. Police say that sometime before 8 p.m., he and 42-year-old Wayne Pratt along with others were socializing near Tammy Store. That's when 2 gunmen opened fire on the group. Injuring Arnold and Pratt. They were both rushed to the KHMH. Arnold would away 2 hours later. We spoke to his sister today off camera:

PUC On Why
The Public Utilities Commission held a press conference to explain its initial decision into the Full Tariff Review Proceeding for BEL. The Chairman explained how they arrived at the rate of 42.42 per kilowatt-hour when BEL had requested 45.33 per kilowatt-hour starting in 2021:

Weed Wedged
Police haven't released any information on it yet, but 7News has learned that Special Branch in Corozal made significant marijuana bust over the holiday weekend. We are told that they have arrested 1 person who was transporting 44 pounds - or almost 20 kilos - of weed. Sources tell us that the suspected drug smuggler tried to carry out his operation in a crafty manner. The person actually hid the parcels inside a vehicle tire. As you can see, the cops had to slice through the tire's material to expose the marijuana cache.
