With the announcement of no active cases of COVID-19 in Belize and with the absence of clusters or an increase in persons with respiratory illness, Belize may have developed a false sense of security when it comes to the pandemic. To date, several preventative measures are in place including the wearing of masks and regular hand washing and sanitization. There is also the continued closure of the points of entry in Belize which Dr. Manzanero says he would recommend remaining this way for a longer period.

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services: “That discussion has happened. I don’t know that we have had discussions around any border opening any time soon and certainly we would not be able to advise on that in terms of – I mean when you look at the scary numbers that Mexico is putting up, Guatemala is starting to do the same thing we can’t possibly make that recommendation or advice but again we advise as a member of the task force.”
