Sea Cucumber Season Closure
The Belize Fisheries Department hereby informs all fishers and the public that in accordance with Statutory Instrument No. 67 of 2009 under the Fisheries Act Chapter 210 Revised Edition 2003 of the Subsidiary Laws of Belize, the Sea Cucumber fishery will be declared closed effective July 1, 2020.

Stakeholders claim not everyone consulted on BTB's new protocols and guidelines
The recently introduced protocols and guidelines for the accommodation sector by the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) apparently caught some tourism stakeholders by surprise. The new measures designed to better operate during the COVID-19 pandemic focuses on health and safety protocols, and according to BTB, involved consultations before approval. However, the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) indicated that individual members might have been consulted, but they, as an association was not.

Eight fishermen charged for possession of out of season lobster and conch; one remanded while others met bail
The lobster season officially opened on June 15th, but a few days before this date, some fishermen were caught with out of season products (lobster and conch) within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve (HCMR). This was the result of increased enforcement efforts by HCMR between June 13th and 15th, leading to the successful prosecution of eight fishermen. The total amount in fines amounted to $13,180 BZ, and one fisherman of Guatemalan nationality was remanded while the others met bail.

OSCAR MIRA INVOLVED IN DUI ACCIDENT
Reports are circulating that Oscar Mira, PUP Standard Bearer for Belmopan, was involved in a traffic accident that left one person, a police officer, seriously injured. Mira was reportedly under the influence and refused to give a blood sample. We await confirmation that charges were laid.

FIFA donates 1.5 Million US Dollars to restart football
FFB executive member Marlon Kuylen confirmed on Thursday that Belize is receiving US$1.5 million to restart football, though no date has been set. Explained Kuylen, "Once we receive the restrictions and regulations, we shall meet to organize how these funds will be disbursed. In our surveys conducted, we already have an idea what it will cost to restart." In total, FIFA has approved a COVID-19 Relief Plan that will make available US$1.5 billion globally to assist the football community, designed by the FIFA administration in close cooperation with representatives of the confederations. In the first two stages of the plan, FIFA provided for the immediate release of all Forward operational-cost payments to member associations and, subsequently, for the opportunity to transform Forward development grants into COVID-19 operational relief funds -with a minimum of 50% of released funds to be allocated to women's football.

The Yucatec Maya group known as the Cruzo'ob Maya were one of the main protagonist of the Maya social War wrongly called the Caste war . The Cruzo'ob Maya mantained a good relationship with the British for some time because the British saw it profitable . The British even recognized the Maya nation of Noj Kaj Cruz as independent but all this ended when the British Government assigned Sir Spenser St. John to disentangle Her Royal Majesty's Government from the Maya free state. In 1893, HRMG signed the Spenser Mariscal Treaty, which ceded the Maya free state's lands to Mexico and a border was created without asking the indigenous Maya.

Isias Oroman found stabbed to death
Police have identified the body of a man who was found stabbed to death early this morning in San Ignacio. He is Isias Oroman, 52, a Guatemalan national who lived in Bullet Tree village. Oromon was found sometime around 6:00 this morning by someone who was exercising along the Bullet Tree Road across from the San Ignacio Town Hospital. He was found in a bushy area along with a knapsack, a beach cruiser bicycle with a machete attached to it. He had two stab wounds to the chest.

Fatal traffic accident on the Southern Highway
There was a fatal traffic accident on Saturday night on the Southern Highway. Police sources say the mishap occurred sometime before 7:00 p.m., near Mile 2, and claimed the life of Hilberto Tush, 31, of Maya Mopan Village, Stann Creek who was driving a motorcycle. Reports are that Tush was traveling towards Punta Gorda when he collided with a black Mitsubishi Montero Sport SUV heading in the opposite direction and allegedly driven by Nateone Nunez, 22, of Belmopan. Tush suffered severe head injuries and died at the Southern Regional Hospital, and Police investigations continue.

Drowning Victim Identified
On Saturday evening a man allegedly drowned at the area known as the Split in Caye Caulker. He has since been identified as Barrington Moss, a security guard residing in San Pedro. The Reporter will follow this story and provide more details as we get them.

Murder in the Cayo District
The Reporter has confirmed a murder in the Cayo District. Details are scarce at this time, but we are told that the body of a Hispanic male was discovered on the Bullet Tree road with what appear to be multiple stab wounds. At this time he is being regarded as a John Doe until he can be identified.

Private Charters can enter Belize on August 15
Confirmed by the Prime Minister of Belize, private charters of planes would be able to enter Belize for leisure travel, but will be subject to screening like everyone else entering Belize. This will also be available on August 15, 2020 with the Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) reopening. All travellers will be required to present a negative PCR test result, taken within 72 hours prior to arrival. Additionally, will be subject to a mandatory temperature checks at the airport; numerous sanitising procedures; and agreement to adhere to a track and trace system.
