What A Difference a Day Can Make! Sargassum and Shuts Down
Sargassum is here on North Ambergris Caye. After a blissful 2020 without it. (It might be the only characteristics of 2020 that I can call “blissful”) As of Friday evening, the border villages of Blue Creek and San Felipe, Orange Walk district have been declared “locked-down” as new cases have been discovered and contact tracking is underway. You can see the villages in the orange dot on the map below – it is a generally rural area of the country but one that has some unique issues.

Girls Can Have Fun Fly Fishing: Learn in Belize
As a fishing novice, the adventure of learning the skill that many spend years perfecting is a special treat and more so when its an untraditional sport for women – gives me even more reason to want to “give it a go”. The idea of being able to reel in my first bonefish had me up bright and early! By 7:00 AM we were on our way to fuel up and head over to Cayo Rosario with our guide, Jorge from Blue Bonefish Fly Shop and Tours. Cayo Rosario is a small mangrove caye that is a short 10-15-minute ride North West of Ambergris Caye, it is an absolutely stunning location, the water is crystal clear. As a haven for the fly fishing community, it is located in the center of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and attracts fishing aficionados from all around the world.

The City of Belmopan and its History
In the America, the country of Belize was the last British colony on the mainland. The City of Belmopan, the ‘new capital’ is the youngest city, established in 1973. Belmopan is located near the town of Roaring Creek in the Belize River Valley at 50 miles west inland from the former capital, Belize City. If you’ve ever been curious about how Belmopan came to be, here’s a little history. In 1961, when we were still known as British Honduras, the city of Belize was devastated by a category 5 hurricane: the notorious Hurricane Hattie.

Altun Ha Maya Site and The Jade Head
Like many ancient ruin sites, the Maya City of Altun Ha is filled with mystery and wonder. Known as Rockstone Pond in Mayan, it is located close to the coast, approximately 31 miles north of Belize City. It was once an ideal place for commerce in the ancient Maya world. Nowadays, the proximity to Belize City makes Altun Ha a popular destination for both locals and international travelers visiting Belize. Artifacts found at the site link it with other major Maya cities such as Teotihuacan in Mexico and Copan in Honduras. Based on the size and grandeur of the buildings and monuments at Altun Ha, in its prime, this was a place of wealth and affluence.

Article from Sports Illustrated almost 30 years ago
It's all about The Belize Zoo and Sharon Matola. In 1992, Sports Illustrated magazine featured the Belize Zoo and founder/director Sharon Matola. The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center were started in 1983 by Sharon, as a last ditch effort to provide a home for a group of wild animals which had been used in making documentary films about tropical forests. Despite having little zoology experience in her background, Sharon decided to start a zoo anyway! Why? When wildlife is tamed, they can no longer survive in the wild. Turning the furry and feathered actors out into the forest was not an option, so signs were painted, word was passed around, and The Belize Zoo was born.
