Do you mean at anytime or just during this crisis? Usually yes, you can access the ATM at Belize Bank with your American ATM. There's a Belize Bank at the airport and I know of one in town (SP).

I read that sometimes ATM's don't work. Where can I exchange money in San Pedro? I'm relying on either using credit cards or cash. Not bringing traveller checks.

When you pay for something with US cash, they will give you the change in BZ dollars.

Advisable to change some US money for BZE when you arrive. Otherwise, you will need to do the math each time you make a purchase, as TQ stated, you will receive BZ dollars as change, even if you pay in US$. ATM will give you Bz $....when they work. Some money exchange offices in SP.

The "math" is still just the 2:1 conversion ratio right, not like doing the old Italian Lire or anything?

Yep but when you've had a lot to drink, figuring out change can be like Italian Lire, dispite the easy math. LOL!

I was there last week during the strike. I had some cash but was relying mainly on using my credit card. This was problematic because many vendors were not able to conduct business with credit cards as the phone lines were down. Some vendors conducted transactions using the the "old" credit method of carbons on the machine that, when swiping the card, leaves the impression on the carbons. One vendor was not familiar with using this method and almost destroyed my credit card. The bank would only allow transactions of not more than $400.00 BZE ($800.00 USD) ... My recommendation, come with cash/travelers checks because you may not be able to use your credit card. Also I ran out of cash and could not pay the departure fee at the airport ... I told them I had no cash and could not access it due to the strike. They let me through without an argument. '

Enjoy your trip. I loved it.

Nolita, you are lucky! There were lots of people bumming (yes bumming) money off of people to get out of the airport (to pay the departure taxes)... it was a bit crazy!
