Man, this Thurs (when we arrive) cannot not come soon enough!
Just wondering if folks could chime in on whether or not we will have troubles using our Visa checkcards at resteraunts and bars? They function just like a normal Visa card. We really do not want to mess with Travelers Checks, and would prefer to use credit and some cash while there. Anyone have ideas as to whether or not this will or will not be a good method of payment?
Cheers Mike-n-Meagan

As long as the phones lines are up (and stay up), that should work. When the phone service was down, some places couldn't take credit cards. You might want to have a back-up plan. Be aware that several places add a 5% charge to use credit (on top of the 2% or so that most cards tack on for international charges). And a few places take either Visa or MC, but not both.

Thanks for the input. The phone lines were kind of what I was worried about. Did not think about a possible 7% charge for using our bank cards. I am so used to using it for everything here, without charges. I think we might just pulse some money each day.

Yeah, the 7% kind of adds up. Not every place added the 5% - in fact, the "nicer" restaurants seemed less likely to. THe ones that did always warned us about it. Have a great time!!!

FYI: I just received notice from MBNA-Visa that international transactions will have a 3% fee added.

i received this message from my hotel yesterday...
Just a heads up, please advise all your clients coming to the island to bring CASH or Travellers Checks. Credit card machines are down and at the moment not too many places are taking credit cards. There is potential strike in the city but everything here on the island is normal except for the credit cards.

I wouldn't count on electronic means, ATMs, FAX phones were down most of our trip, and we were without power off and water on several occasions. If you belong to AAA you can get American Express dual signature travellers checks free. There are several banks on the island where you can go cash some every few days as needed and never had a problem when we used a couple of them for purchases, and lots of places don't even take credit cards. I made a copy of my photo/info page so that I didn't have to carry my passport around and it worked out great.

"mess with Travelers Checks" How hard is that? The last time I was there the hotel I stayed at would cash them for me. IMHO they are far safer than any other options. It would be a cold day in H**L before I would randomly give out my credit card info in any developing country!
BTW, I learned this the hard way!

CYA, I am from MN too... You know, I have never been screwed in Belize with my credit card or any other means. I HAVE been screwed on a regular basis, in our country. With credit card charges and much larger means. Don't forget, in general Belizeans are much kinder(kind-hearted) people than Americans.
