What, exactly, did the Summerwind do to damage the reef? How badly was the reef damaged?

Another uninformed american comes to another country and tries to bring with him the codes and laws and knowledge of the great U.S. of A.

Chivas,

The Summerwind is a very large (@ 100') yacht that anchored inside the reef. The captain did so without permission (this size boat is just too larger for inside the reef) and was eventually asked to take his boat outside the reef. Now, its important to understand that it takes a fairly significant anchor and chain to "anchor" your 100 foot yacht.

The Summerwind proceeded just outside the reef and dropped anchor. My best guess (and this is without any underwater survey gear) from having been on site is that before the Summerwind's Anchor and chain stopped destroying coral and other sealife it had effectively wiped out an area about the size of a U.S. Football field (see there Pedro, another example of uninformed, uneducated americanism). Truly sad and probably irreparable.

Pedro, just FYI, I wish we could get laws like that in the states. In almost all cases, we can't. Hey, what do you know, Belize is ahead of the game.

I stand by my prior posts.

itjustme,

If Summerwind anchored inside the reef, as it's been said, without permission then why didn't any of the GOB reps (police, ports authority, etc) that visited the boat ask them to go outside the reef? I think you're misinformed. They were given permission to anchor inside and only moved when rubbing bottom. That move was to avoid a potentially worse problem of dumping thousands of gallons of diesel into the water. Not to mention what can happen to a fiberglass boat after a fire might break out....life threatening to the crew. That was what they were told; not to move unless potentially life threatening. I agree it's terrible if/when damage occurs to something so sacred as the reef. I also think it's terrible that the individuals responsible for issuing a fine for such an occurrence can't get it together enough to do so in the 5 days the boat sat here after the damage occurred. I think the chance is lost. Court action or lawsuits at this point are destined to go nowhere as a person who can afford a $9 million toy probably has more attorneys on staff than are in all of Belize and not to mention his insurance company will probably take up his fight anyway. Who's going to fund Belize's end of that battle? I expect your next post to be about the fund you're setting up for such a cause and detailing your initial generous contribution......

cheers!

Could we please put this thing to rest, there's way too much disinformation to even come close to the real story. At least when you buy 5 newspapers in Belize, read the same story, throw out 90% of what you read then you have something close to the truth.

Sounds like this thread was started by a bunch of lawyers.

P.S. Since when does free standing diesel explode without a high heat source (not just a spark)?

Seems like only the lawyers will make a buck here at the expense of the longest living reef on the planet.
