Report from Peter Xingfield in the north of Belize. Says at least 1400
cattle dead and thousands more nearly so. No hay was flown in from USA
or Canada by relief agencies. It is not produced in Belize being a
The cattle are penned in to flooded pastures by fences and cannot roam,
or forage. Standing up to their bellies in flood waters. The grass is
ruined for three months after the flood water recedes.
It may be too late now to save the cattle industry. They have been
starving for two weeks. Water is still flooding and the drain off will
take about two more months.
