Having read the post before this where an hotel deposit was not returned when the trip was cancelled because of a death, I just wondered if anyone can give me names of reasonable travel insurance companies. Having never bothered with it before, but seeing it being strongly recommended here, I know nothing about it, except for what was mentioned in the other post, that you have to get the insurance before you book the trip.

Do you know if the insurance covers cancellation of flights that are booked with frequent flyer miles?

I'm almost ready to book, but it sounds like I need to get that insurance in place first!

Thanks Dux and Chloe, I'll check those links out, and am assuming that you do have to purchase it prior to booking flights and hotels? I know that sounds odd, but if I'm booking up this week for December, do I have any leeway to get all the pieces put together??

For Travel Guard, you can puchase online and simply pay a premium based on how much all your travel arrangements cost -- no proof required at time of insurance purchase. I am sure you will have to provide proof if seeking a claim. Great service!

Didn't really answer your question. Doesn't matter what order you purchase travel v. insurance so long as both are purchased a certain amount of time prior to trip. See website for details.

Moon, We use Travel Guard and have had to use the insurance. I can tell you that they are a good company to deal with. We were in San Pedro when our adult daughter at home was diagnosed with Acute Mycloid Leukemia. I may not have spelled it right, but it is a very scarry disease that can kill a person in a week. I can't describe the peace of mind knowing one call can have someone making all the arrangements to get you home as fast as possible in a time of extreme stress. Travel Guard picked up all expenses and even offered to pay for the flight from AC to Belize City.
I maybe a fool but I sure don't have to worry about anything interfering with or interrupting our vacations.

Thanks K&S for that link - I've just checked it out and it's pricing Travel Guard at a higher rate than Travel Guard did my going directly to them. The other thing is, that knowing they took care of everything for Crockhunter is a huge plus in deciding who to go with. Most people never need it, so it's good to know they came through when the insurance was needed.

Just as an aside, have most people who've bought travel insurance for AC also bought it for trips to other Caribbean islands or other countries?
