Definitely do not stay on the ground floor! The biggest threat is rising water due to storm surge. Get up 2 or 3 floors in a concrete building, preferably one with a concrete roof.

this info is to inform not scare...with hurricanes it is best to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.Storms this early in the season Wobble...ie. Charlie hitting Punta Gorda last year in Florida but wasn't suppose to...

If you have a pool Sink all the non metal furniture and bring in anything that can become a projectile with high winds...

I prefer to vent my house during the storm to not create pressure but others say close it up airtight guess it depends on the structure type.get flashlights and extra batteries if still available and hopefully you have a weather radio or someone does close by.

Non-perishable food is good but the jugs of water in the freezer will help you from losing that food and 2 in the frig will also keep it cool for at least 24 hours try to put drinks in a seperate cooler to avoid opening and closing the frig to much.I hope this helps if I think of anything else I'll post...hopefully you will not need to implement this info

Good thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Wow what a difference a week makes, remember wishing for some breeze a week ago but not to this extent. Susie keep singing.

Neighbors who stayed at home on the Placencia Peninsula during Iris said they weren't really worried until the car belonging to one of them floated by!

Thank you Jessie and Marty for the updates. My husband and son are on Ambergris building our house which is about 20 yards off the water. It's almost finished. We are expecting the worst and may be left with rubble when this is over. At this point, personal safety of my family and our friends there is the only thing of priority. I spoke to my husband a few minutes ago from Coconuts and he said that taking a flight is no longer an option because of the long lines and that the water taxis are going to stop soon. He and my son are leaving whatever way they can and are going to try to get to Orange Walk today. This is the first hurricane that we have dealt with and needless to say, we are worried.
Please keep the updates coming....this is now the only way I have of knowing what is going on.
Be safe everyone.
Marsha

Thank you for all of the constant updates. And Jesse, thank you for the weather post section as well. It is a huge help. Prepared for my first hurricane. Staying on the island as I would never leave Karmin. Pets are not able to evacuate. The last boat out is in an hour and the word is the airport is now full.
