We are going to be in A. Caye in a few weeks and understand the mosquitos can get quite anoying. Is there a repellent you can suggest. Everything I see is no higher than 25% deet. Thanks

Check out Wal-Martthey have some that are 100% Deet. Should be able to kill something with that.

Don't need to go that far and it eats everything plastic. If you are going to be spending some time in the jungle, yes, but on AC it's not that bad unless the winds come from the NW or W (not often.)

I'll be visiting Belize from Canada and noticed the same thing with the "low" deet in the repellant... I don't think we're allowed the stronger stuff here. Maybe it's just in the US you can get higher concentrations of it? Does anyone have any suggestions for anything that works just as well but doesn't have deet (ie human friendly bug killer)?

Thanks so much for all the information. We are so excited about our trip and I'll just get the "Off".

Simon is right - we did the big search for 100% Deet only to learn later that we did not need anything that strong. Taken from a website about repellents: "Concentrations of DEET range from about 5% to 100% and, generally, products with higher concentrations of DEET repel insects longer. However, at some point there is not a direct correlation between concentrations and repellency. For example, 50% DEET provides about four hours of protection against mosquitoes, but increasing the concentration to 100% provides only one additional hour of protection." The 100% stuff smelled much stronger, was more expensive and didn't work any better as far as we could tell. Deep Woods Off has aobut 33% Deet and you shouldn't need anything stronger. Regular Off has 15% Deet and will need to be reapplied hourly.

As for the Skin So Soft - no scientific evidence it's effective - same website says to the extent it provides any protection at all, it's "a weak, short-lasting (less than 20 minutes) mosquito repellant."

The bugs in Cayo and Placencia were BAD this trip. Worst I've seen, but I spent a lot of time in the bush this trip.
