Office of the Prime Minister
State of Emergency Lifted
17 October, 2000 - Belmopan
The State of Emergency imposed on the country of Belize in the wake of
Hurricane Keith has been lifted effective today.
That announcement came this afternoon from the National Emergency
Management Organization (NEMO). A Statutory Instrument lifting the
State of Emergency will be gazetted.
All regulations enforced during the State of Emergency including the
curfew and regulations related to the sale of alcoholic beverages have
been revoked.
The State of Emergency was announced on October 4 by Prime Minister Hon.
Said Musa to give Cabinet the mandate to use all necessary measures to
protect life and property of the people of Belize after Hurricane Keith
struck the country.
While the work of rebuilding continues, the decision to lift the State
of Emergency was taken in order to help the process of returning the
country to normal.
(NEMO) expresses its gratitude and appreciation to everyone in both the
public and private sectors who have assisted during this difficult
period.
All NEMO Operational Committees will continue their work or evaluation,
assessment and coordination of International relief assistance to
Belize.
