A HURRICANE WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM BELIZE CITY NORTHWARD TO CANCUN...AND A TROPICAL STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR ALL OF COASTAL BELIZE...AND FOR THE EAST COAST OF THE YUCATAN PENINSULA FROM THE MEXICO/BELIZE BORDER NORTHWARD TO CANCUN. A TROPICAL STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR THE GULF COAST OF THE YUCATAN PENINSULA FROM PROGRESO TO CARMEN.
AT 10 PM CDT...0300Z...THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM CHANTAL WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 18.4 NORTH...LONGITUDE 88.3 WEST...OR VERY NEAR CHETUMAL MEXICO.
CHANTAL IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST NORTHWEST NEAR 13 MPH...20KM/HR... AND THIS MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS. ON THIS TRACK...CHANTAL WOULD EMERGE INTO THE SOUTHERN GULF OF MEXICO TOMORROW AFTERNOON OR EVENING.
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 70 MPH...110 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. CHANTAL IS EXPECTED TO WEAKEN AS IT CROSSES THE YUCATAN PENINSULA.
TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 200 MILES ...325 KM...MAINLY TO THE NORTHEAST OF THE CENTER.
JUST PRIOR TO LANDFALL...AN AIR FORCE RESERVE UNIT RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT REPORTED A MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE OF 1001 MB...29.56
INCHES.
ALTHOUGH THE CENTER HAS CROSSED THE COAST...MOST OF THE HEAVIEST RAINS AND STRONGEST WINDS NORTH AND EAST OF THE CENTER WILL NOT MOVE ONSHORE FOR ANOTHER 6 TO 12 HOURS.
STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 2 TO 3 FEET...ACCOMPANIED BY BATTERING WAVES...IS POSSIBLE NEAR AND NORTH OF THE BELIZE/MEXICO BORDER...AND 1 TO 2 FEET ALONG PORTIONS OF THE GULF COAST OF YUCATAN ON TUESDAY.
RAINFALL TOTALS OF 8 TO 12 INCHES...WITH ISOLATED HIGHER AMOUNTS...ARE POSSIBLE ALONG AND NEAR THE PATH OF CHANTAL.
REPEATING THE 10 PM CDT POSITION...18.4 N... 88.3 W. MOVEMENT
TOWARD...WEST NORTHWEST NEAR 13 MPH. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS... 70 MPH. MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...1001 MB.
