New Jersey & Ambergris Caye be...
Lets see here, If we build a bridge, will the problem get better smile or will it get worse eek I think easy access to north means more trouble makers (dealers and other criminals) will have better access to the ever growing population of the northern side mad

I want to be just like Capt Jeff when I grow up!

So I have a question. If ScubaLdy knows who the drug dealers are, and most of the frequent visitors know who the dealers are, and most of the full and part time residents know who the bad guys are....well then... WHAT the heck are the local police doing? I have been offered drugs in San Pedro, Placencia, Belize City, Corozal and most of all every day I have ever spent on Caye Caulker. I have always just said no thanks and have never had a problem. That said...again...what are the local police doing? And a bigger problem coming is local gangs. On Ambergris Caye there is gang graffitti, most notable is "Los Angeles 18th Street" gang slogans. And as more Belizian gang bangers make their way out to the islands it will only get worse. The community needs to really address some growing pains, more than just the bridge! Now before all of the SP defenders jump all over me for stating some facts, here is where I stand. I hope to live in San Pedro in a few years. I bring over 100 tourists to the island for a now yearly skydive event. I am willing to work hard to make San Pedro a better place. I think San Pedro is still one of the SAFEST places to vacation, with some of the greatest locals and ex pats I am proud to call friends. Every day my 7 year old asks "when are we moving to San Pedro"? I just hope when I retire from the Fire Dept. and Mrs. Reaper retires from the gang prosecution unit at the DA's office a safe San Pedro awaits. So to all of the future visitors..don't buy drugs! And I'm being a bit of a hypocrite and I apologize, because I know some of my group this year broke some laws, and they weren't invited back. frown

I stayed at Brianna's before, I loved the location, and the vendors I encountered did not open the gate and come up to the door, they asked in passing if I was interested, and that was every vendor, food, crafts, and otherwise. I said yes to meat pies, plaintains, and a cool little piece of art. I said no to drugs, and was only asked once, and never again. I have to agree with everyone else who thinks it was the father that got everyone into this mess. What a dope (pun intended). If tourists would not create the market, maybe the dealers would be forced back to the mainland. It was encouraging that the local law enforcement is finally cracking down on drugs. If you buy, you are guilty, if you sell, you are guilty. Doesn't matter to me which end of the stick the cops choose to enforce, it's illegal, and to encourage it to continue by buying, and expect not to suffer the consequences if busted, is outrageous. Your family gets to go home at the end of your holiday, the good folks of San Pedro have to live with, and have their kids subjected to, this "economy" that you just supported.

The neighbors are good people, and hey, they have kids there. How would you feel if your kids had to put up with drunks one week, druggies the next? I had some good talks with them, and they shared so many interesting things. When it was time to leave, I gave them everything I had leftover, and they appreciated it. Even if your stay on AC is a short time, take the time to be a good neighbor, the locals will appreciate it. This is more of a residential area than many of the other places on AC, and I liked it even more for that reason. I would much rather put up with the dogs, than some of the sloppy drunks at the hotels.

Sandy does a great job with this quaint little rental house, and Searious is one of the most respected tour operators on the island. Willie can do many things, but he cannot control the speed and flow of the river.

I feel that you owe Sandy and Willie an apology. I know I sure wouldn't have gone to bat for you if you were caught doing something illegal in a property I owned. I would have kicked you out then and there. You were treated decently.

The island has to take a stand against drugs, before the tourist economy grows any larger. What a horrible public image that would be to those of us who love it. I think of Jamaica, and think, great beaches and drugs. I don't think anyone wants AC moving in that direction. So get the tourists who are busted on the next available plane off the island, and send the message that buying will not be tolerated. You wanna smoke, do it in your home, in your country.

Brianna's House is darling, but it does not afford visitors the protection that resorts/hotels will. One trip I noted the GATE was off the hinges at the house.

Trust me anyone can spot the drug dealers in SP.. unless your heads are buried in the sand or elsewhere. I found the drug dealers to be extremely annoying and alarming, since I had teenagers with me, and yes the drug dealers were rude, after several days of hearing us say NO THANK YOU. That was more than 4 yrs ago, and as I keep up with this board, the drug dealers have become more bold and rude.

NOW we all know why the drug dealers are being allowed to sell out in the open on the streets in San Pedro, don't we. Don't give me that old excuse of supply and demand of the visitors only.

Sorry, I've been off thread for a while.

I think "Leave me alone or I will call the police" to an unwanted offer of illegal drugs ought to be the answer of choice (at least when it's safe to say so) rather than a polite "no thanks." I just don't see why we should be friendly to people who wish to do harm. Why should their existence here be a pleasant one?

I mean, "No thanks, I'd rather you didn't burgle my house" is hardly a deterrent to theft, "Thanks awfully to your attempted strangulation of my sister but not today" is not going to stop murders.

We look to the law and the police and amongst ourselves to stop stealing and killing. Why can't we do the same with drug dealers?

Hey Chris can we visitors that don't buy drugs from the dealers, rent a PAINT gun in San Pedro, so we can shoot everyone of the dealers, that offer to sell us drugs??? Wouldn't that be FUN, and also identify the scum to all.

I just wanted to share my experiences with BBH, which were all very positive. I stayed a week there Oct. 2004 with a friend that has stayed there a few times over the last couple of years. This friend of mine has actually become friends with the neighbor you speak of and she is in no way rude to tourists. Her dogs only barked at things that were out of the ordinary and they seemed comfortable with the daily foot/golf cart traffic that past by the home. As for the pages that were cut from the book, I asked the housekeeper about this myself because I thought it looked odd. She said that she had cut out comments that contained offense language because families read that book. She said young college students would leave comments that they must of thought were amusing. The vendors never entered the gate and would ask from the road if we were interested in their goods. Those goods being meat pies, fresh fruits and other things that were not illegal substances. My friend became ill on our stay and the doctor even made a house call to see her. Where can you have a house call with medications for $20.00 US??? I fell in love with the island and its people and plan to return once my friends house is completed south of town. I would recommend BBH to all that like the idea of having their own little house while on vacation. Sorry to hear of your experience but like everyone is saying, all your father in law had to do was say no and they would have left and if not, you could have threatened to call the police and that would have run them off. My friend will be making her 4th trip (this year) down over Thanksgiving with her son, but was not able to book BBH because her trip is a last minute decision. She will be stopping by to visit both Sandy, the neighbor and the many friendly folks she has met over the last couple of years. laugh

It's time to start calling the police EVERY TIME you are approched to buy drugs. The clean up can happen if the police want it to happen and we quit walking on by saying no thanks like we have been offered a trinket. It takes effort to call, more then most are probably willing to do. So will the police come if called?
Hey how about this a reward given to the police officer when he brings in a drug dealer, with drugs. Say $40bz? Would that be enough?
